This book, now in its ninth edition, still has the character of a textbook with the emphasis on "Physics". The volume has increased somewhat because several improvements have been made and some new items have been included. In Sect. 13. 2 the new Quantum Cascade Laser which covers the far in frared spectral range has been added. In Sect. 14. 4 the theory of the quantum Hall effect is now based on ballistic transport which in a more general respect without referring to the then still unknown quantum Hall effect was consid ered already by Rudolf Peierls. In the same chapter, the recent discovery of a low-temperature resistance oscillation in a very pure semiconductor under the influence of combined dc and ac electric fields in addition to a magnetic field is presented. Furthermore, quantum Hall effect observations with an unprece dented high precision are remarkable and may give a new impetus to theory. A new Sect. 15. 5 presents information about coaxial carbon tubes of nanometer size diameter and how they are integrated as the current transporting element in a field effect transistor. In another new addition Sect. 15. 6 with the title Molecular Electronics, the current-voltage rectifying characteristics of an or ganic Langmuir-Blodgett film of nanometer thickness is shown. These efforts serve to demonstrate where the ever decreasing size of electronic circuits may come to its natural limits. The system of units preferred here is the SI system.

The first edition of "Semiconductor Physics" was published in 1973 by Springer-Verlag Wien-New York as a paperback in the Springer Study Edition. In 1977, a Russian translation by Professor Yu. K. Pozhela and coworkers at Vilnius/USSR was published by Izdatelstvo "MIR", Mo scow. Since then new ideas have been developed in the field of semi conductors such as electron hole droplets, dangling bond saturation in amorphous silicon by hydrogen, or the determination of the fine struc ture constant from surface quantization in inversion layers. New tech niques such as molecular beam epitaxy which has made the realization of the Esaki superlattice possible, deep level transient spectroscopy, and refined a. c. Hall techniques have evolved. Now that the Viennese edition is about to go out of print, Springer-Verlag, Berlin-Heidelberg-New York is giving me the opportunity to include these new subjects in a monograph to appear in the Solid-State Sciences series. Again it has been the intention to cover the field of semiconductor physics comprehensively, although some chapters such as diffusion of hot carriers and their galvanomagnetic phenomena, as well as super conducting degenerate semiconductors and the appendices, had to go for commercial reasons. The emphasis is more on physics than on device as pects.

An understanding of how these devices work requires a detailed knowledge of the physics of semiconductors, including charge transport and the emission and absorption of electromagnetic waves. This book may serve both as a university textbook and as a reference for research and microelectronics engineering. Each section of the book begins with a description of an experiment. The theory is then developed as far as necessary to understand the experimental results. Everyone with high-school mathematics should be able to follow the calculations. A band structure calculation for the diamond lattice is supplemented with a personal computer program. Semiconductor physics developed most rapidly in the two decades following the invention of the transistor, and naturally most of the references date from this time. But recent developments such as the Gunn effect, the acoustoelectric effect, superlattices, quantum well structures, and the integral and fractional quantum Hall effect are also discussed. The book has appeared in translation in Russian, Chinese and Japanese.

This book, now in its eighth edition, still has the character of a textbook with the emphasis on "Physics". I have refrained from sacrificing topics such as the Seebeck, Thomson, Peltier and quantum Hall effects although they do not have a large-scale practical application. The various kinds of field effect transistors such as HBT, HEMT, MODFET and the chip technology have not been considered because going into details would necessarily end up with referring the interested reader to commercially available computer programs, i.e. to the Big Business world. What is new compared with the previous edition? In Chap. 1 you will now find a short description of production processes of pure single crystal silicon which is nearly free of lattice defects. In Sect. 4.14 the calculation of current in a sample subject to combined de and high-frequency ac fields is based on quantum mechanics rather than classical physics (called "photon assisted tunneling"). The calculation is applied to charge transport in quantum wires and dots in Chap.14. This chapter includes production methods for quantum dots in their regular arrangement and a dot laser which operates at room temperature. In Chap. 15 there is a new section on doped Fullerenes in view of a field effect transistor based on this material. There are two more appendices: One provides a calculation of the potentials in quantum wells, and the other is a table of 38 semiconductors and semimetals with their characteristic data.
