In diesem Buch wird die Rolle der næfæs in den Menschenvorstellungen des AT umfassend untersucht. Mit Hilfe der Analyse konzeptueller Metonymien, einer Methodik aus der Kognitiven Linguistik, wird u.a. folgenden Fragen nachgegangen: Verbirgt sich hinter næfæs eine Seelenvorstellung? Ist die synthetische Körperauffassung, d. h. das enge Zusammendenken von Körperteil und Funktion, wirklich eine semitische Besonderheit? Was bedeutet es, wenn der Mensch sich als næfæs bezeichnet, statt ein anderes Körperteil/Organ zur Selbstbezeichnung zu wählen? Kann man aus dieser Verwendung Rückschlüsse auf das gedankliche Konzept, das hinter der Verwendung des Wortes steht, ziehen? Und schließlich: Ist næfæs tatsächlich wie oft angenommen ein anthropologischer Grundbegriff, d.h. wichtiger für das Menschenbild als andere Körperteile?
