Although historical research undertaken in different disciplines often requires speculation and imagination, it remains relatively rare for scholars to foreground these processes explicitly as a knowing method. Historical Research, Creative Writing, and the Past brings together researchers in a wide array of disciplines, including literary studies and history, ethnography, design, film, and sound studies, who employ imagination, creativity, or fiction in their own historical scholarship or who analyze the use of imagination, creativity, or fiction to make historical claims by others. This volume is organized into four topical sections related to representations of the past—textual and conceptual approaches; material and emotional approaches; speculative and experiential approaches; and embodied methodologies—and covers a variety of temporal periods and geographical contexts. Reflecting on the methodological, theoretical, and ethical underpinnings of writing history creatively or speculatively, the essays situate themselves within current debates over epistemology and interdisciplinarity. They yield new insights into historical research methods, including archival investigations and source criticisms, while offering readers tangible examples of how to do history differently.

Although charity is, arguably, rooted in the Old Testament and the New Testament and philanthropy, as a concept, emerges in the seventeenth century, it was only in the nineteenth century that these concepts assumed their modern form. From the abolition of the slave trade to the building of the People’s Palace for East London, social causes are inextricably intertwined with the charitable giving and philanthropic impulses on which they rely for tangible support. This volume focuses on individuals who, unlike those documented in volume two, did not have significant financial resources but were nevertheless leading figures in the philanthropic landscape, such as Walter Besant or Edmund Hay Currie. It also focuses on efforts that were not strictly about providing services or support but in advocating for social change as well.

From newsletters and magazines to bazaars and dinners to festivals and concerts, charities and philanthropic enterprises competed among one another to obtain financial support for their causes, justify their expenditures and, to borrow a phrase from a recent historical study, "monetize compassion." Richly illustrated, this volume documents the business of charity and philanthropy.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, many individuals were motivated by their religious creeds to give. As religious faith began to wane in the period, others were inspired by humanitarian commitments or moral (but not necessarily scriptural) zeal. The contents of this volume introduce readers to the many individuals who distinguished themselves through charity and philanthropy, including Angela Burdett-Coutts, Florence Nightingale, Grace Kimmins, the Earl of Shaftesbury, and the American George Peabody, and the causes they took up.

Through contributions of money and time, many individuals made a variety of philanthropic enterprises possible. Just as often, however, benevolent efforts emerged from and were carried out through networks of individuals and public cooperative groups. Although Elizabeth Gaskell was influenced by Mary Russell Mitford, and George Eliot by Gaskell, only a small number of scholars have considered the affinities and resemblances among all three writers of provincial fiction, and none have done so in depth. Establishing a chain of influence, this book considers Mitford, Gaskell, and Eliot’s interrelated careers, including the challenges they encountered in achieving distinction within the literary sphere, and the various pressures exerted on them by publishers, reviewers, and editors. It also analyses the career-enhancing possibilities afforded by different modes of publication—including periodicals, anthologies, the three-volume novel, and monthly and bimonthly instalments—as well as their concomitant limitations. In so doing, the book offers a reassessment of Mitford’s and Gaskell’s provincial fiction, which has been frequently derided as a ‘minor literature’. It also demonstrates the importance of their work to the development of Eliot’s liberalism in the age of high realism.
