This book is the proceedings of an International Wenner-Gren Center Foundation Symposium on "Excitotoxins" held at the Wenner-Gren Center in Stockholm on August 26 and 27, 1982. We are particularly happy that so many of the leading scientists in this field have been able to participate in this symposium. Since the book on "Kainic Acid" appeared in 1978 edited by Dr. McGeers and Dr. John Olney there has been an explosive interest in the research on neuroexcitatory and toxic amino acids. We therefore feIt the time was right to bring the leading experts in this field together by organising a symposium on "Excitotoxins". In this way we hoped to have a penetrating and friendly discussion on the mechanisms underlying the neuroexcitatory and neurotoxic properties of excitotoxins and their relationship to the glutamate and aspartate neuron systems of the brain. In Sweden we have previously had a symposium on "6-hydroxydopamine as a denervation tool in catecholamine research" held in Goteborg, Sweden, July 17-19, 1975 and organized by Drs. Gosta Jonsson, Torbjorn Malmfors and Charlotte Sachs.This symposium illustrated the considerable interest Swedish neuroscientists have had on highly specific neurotoxins, such as 6-hydroxydopamine, 5,6-dihydroxytryptamine and 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine; neurotoxins, which can produce damage to a certain type of transmitter-identified neuron. However, the neurotoxins, kainic acid and ibotenic acid represent another type of an invaluable tool in the experimental studies on brain function.

Dynamics of Degeneration and Growth in Neurons is a collection of papers presented at the International Symposium on the Dynamics of Degeneration and Growth in Neurons, held in Stockholm, Sweden, on May 16-18, 1973. Contributors explore the dynamics of degeneration and growth of central and peripheral neurons, touching on a wide range of topics such as the neurotoxic action of 6-hydroxy-dopa on central catecholamine neurons; axonal transport of proteins in growing and regenerating neurons; and collateral reinnervation in the central nervous system. Comprised of 50 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of degeneration processes in central and peripheral neurons. Results of microfluorimetric and neurochemical studies on degenerating and regenerating adrenergic nerves are presented. The next section is devoted to axoplasmic transport as a mechanism for axonal support and growth and includes chapters dealing with the effects of degeneration and axoplasmic transport blockade on synaptic ultrastructure, function, and protein composition; the role of axoplasmic flow in trophism of skeletal muscle; and proximodistal transport of acetylcholine in peripheral cholinergic neurons. The remaining chapters discuss the nerve growth factor receptor and its specific binding in sympathetic ganglia; the noradrenergic innervation of cerebellar Purkinje cells; and the possible role of brain and peripheral monoamines in the ontogenesis of normal and drug-induced responses in the immature mammal. This book will be of interest to physiologists and neurologists.

Central Adrenaline Neurons: Basic Aspects and their Role in Cardiovascular Functions contains the proceedings of an international symposium held at The Wenner-Oren Center, Stockholm on August 27-28, 1979. The purpose of the meeting is to summarize the knowledge of central adrenaline neurons and their role in cardiovascular functions. Organized into four sections, this book begins with a discussion on the morphology, biochemistry, and pharmacology of central adrenaline neurons. Subsequent sections detail the cardiovascular functions of central catecholamine neurons and the effects of centrally acting drugs on sympathetic function in normotensive and hypertensive patients. An overview lecture of the concept of α- and β-adrenergic receptors is also shown.

Steroid Hormone Regulation of the Brain focuses on the advancement of knowledge of the properties of brain steroid receptors and steroid target nerve cells, including the actions of gonadal steroids, adrenocortical steroids, and androgenic steroids on the brain. The selection features the work of authors who have inspiringly conducted extensive studies on the action of steroid hormones. The book starts with discussions that point out that steroid hormones not only function through intracellular steroid receptors, but possibly through steroid membrane actions as well. Studies to support this claim are presented. As to the action of steroid hormones on presynaptic transmitter mechanisms, the book suggests that adrenocortical and gonadal steroids can create alterations in noradrenaline, adrenaline, and dopamine levels and turnover within the hypothalamus and preoptic area. The effects of catecholestrogens on the brain are also elaborated. A contribution to this paper stresses that estrogens have antidopaminergic action in the extrapyramidal system. This idea is identified through a series of behavioral experiments and measurements of the levels of striatal acetylcholine. This selection is recommended to scientists interested in studying the effect of hormones on the brain.

Dopaminergic Ergot Derivatives and Motor Function is a collection of papers from the proceedings of an international symposium of the same topic, held in Stockholm on July 24-25, 1978. This collection of papers covers laboratory studies on different subjects such as the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology of dopaminergic pathways of the brain.
