Goethe’s summer house was a very special place, even in his own time: Until the end of his life, he returned again and again to the little house on the edge of the city. As part of the ensemble UNESCO World Heritage Site " Classical Weimar" the Park an der Ilm is equally a preserved garden and a place of recreation. The book describes the exemplary development from what was initially a baroque complex at the time of Goethe to a landscaped park in the English style and undergoing the phases of development typical for the epoch from 77 to 83 . In addition to the Wörlitzer Park this garden developed into one of the most modern of its age in Germany. Unlike many other contemporary gardens in Weimar here they largely managed without allegorical accessories and were also sparing as regards monuments and architecture. Today, the garden is still characterized by a highly varied design and spatial concept comprising components that though artificially shaped still appear natural looking.

Nietzsche’s sister Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche not only looked after her ill brother but also exploited the cult-like admiration the philosopher enjoyed for her own ends and installed the Nietzsche Archive in the building. Englische Ausgabe Die Villa Silberblick, in der Friedrich Nietzsche geistig umnachtet seine letzten Lebensjahre verbrachte, war ursprünglich ein bürgerliches Wohnhaus. Nietzsches Schwester Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche pflegte den Kranken dort nicht nur, sondern wusste auch die kultische Verehrung des Philosophen für ihre eigenen Zwecke zu lenken und richtete im Gebäude das Nietzsche-Archiv ein. Auf wirksame Inszenierung bedacht und geschäftstüchtig, beauftragte sie nach Nietzsches Tod den belgischen Jugendstilkünstler Henry van de Velde, das Archiv zu einer Weihestätte des Nietzsche-Kults umzugestalten. In den ersten Jahren Anziehungspunkt der europäischen Avantgarde, wurde das Archiv durch Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche später in das Kielwasser der Nationalsozialisten gesteuert, bevor es deswegen in der DDR zum Unort wurde. Readers are taken on a tour of the library's collections and premises, starting in the historical building and the Renaissance Hall now housing the Cranach exhibition. From there, they proceed to the famous Rococo Hall of 7 , the Book Tower, the underground stacks, and the new Study Centre with the Book Cube of 2 5. The miscellaneous collections presented here range from that of manuscripts which predate book printing to pamphlets of the Reformation period, from the world's largest Faust collection to the charred books salvaged from the ashes of the fire of 2 4 that have since been restored. Die Gesamtausgabe der Briefe an Goethe in Regestform erschließt mehr als 19.800 Briefe von etwa 3.500 Absendern. Die bisher erschienenen neun Bände umfassen den Zeitraum 1764 bis 1822 und präsentieren über 14.000 Briefregesten. Das mehrgliedrige Regest informiert über den Inhalt des Briefes und stellt ihn in den Zusammenhang von Goethes persönlichen Korrespondenzbeziehungen. Die Briefregesten werden durch Orts-, Personen- und Werkregister ergänzt. Band 10 dokumentiert Goethes persönliche Korrespondenz in den Jahren 1823 und 1824. Er umfasst die Regesten von fast 1.100 Briefen von 448 Absendern.
