Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: A, Union Graduate College, course: Managing Ethically in a Global Environment, language: English, abstract: "e;When in Rome, do as the Romans do"e; [1] is a saying that exists in many cultures all over the world. Although it is very old - it can be traced all the way back to the days of St. Ambrose in the fourth century - it briefly describes on of the major challenges companies face in today's globalized economy. Should they follow a universal code of business behavior or adapt to the customs in a particular country. A classic case for this question is the Lockheed Case. In the early 1970s Lockheed had serious economic problems. Facing bankruptcy it secured a government loan of $250 million in 1970. In 1972 and 1973, briberies of the Japanese government were revealed. It turned out that the President of Lockheed, A. Carl Kotchian, authorized secret payments of $12 million to representatives of the Japanese Prime Minister, Kukeo Tanaka, to secure sales contracts in the Japanese aircraft market. As a result, both Prime Minister Tanaka and CEO Kotchian had to resign. Lockheed's contracts in Japan were cancelled. A consequence of these incidents is the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1997 that prohibits American corporations making payments to foreign governments to advance their business interests. In this paper, I will discuss certain topics related to this case and show, why Kotchian did not exhibit ethical behavior in his role as President of Lockheed.

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: A, Union Graduate College, course: Managing Ethically in a Global Environment, language: English, abstract: The issue of unionization has been very contented in the United States for a long time. Even though it was already discussed controversially in the 19th century, it lost nothing of its actuality, despite all changes in the economic environment. Right now this can be seen in Wisconsin, where a hard-fought debate is going on about the privileges of state workers' unions. Many people today think that unions had a lot of merits in recent history, but are outdated now and not necessary anymore. In this paper I will show that this opinion shortsighted and why unions are still an important factor in today's society, especially in the face of the challenges of globalization.

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: A, Union Graduate College, course: Managing Ethically in a Global Environment, language: English, abstract: What is the primary responsibility of a manager? This question is an old one. However, in the light of several incidents in recent years - some examples are the financial crisis, the BP oil spill and the Enron scandal - it seems to be a more a present-day problem than ever before. The traditional answer to it is also mirrored in business law and states that managers are agents of the stockholders and work solely for their benefit. This view is commonly referred to as the stockholder view. The contrary position to this is the stakeholder view. It asserts that in addition to stockholders, managers have also a fiduciary duty to employees, customers and other stakeholders, including the stockholders. In this paper, arguments both for and against each view will be presented. It will also be claimed that acting in strict accordance to one of the theories is an inappropriate way of managing a company, for ethical and practical reasons. Rather, the opposing views do not necessarily exclude each other. A synthesis of the two contrasts is not impossible, as it can be seen in the recently developed concept of the Triple Bottom Line.

Scientific Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: A, Union Graduate College, course: Managing People and Teams in Organizations, language: English, abstract: Every year, the business magazine Fortune publishes its list of the 100 Best Companies To Work For(R). For this purpose Fortune partners with the global research consulting firm Great Place to Work Institute(R) to conduct the "e;most extensive employee survey in corporate America"e; [1] with 407 participating companies this year. Only companies that are more than seven years old and have at least 1,000 employees are eligible. A company's score in this ranking is based on two factors. One is a 57-question survey sent to a minimum of 400 randomly selected employees, asking for things like attitudes towards the management and job satisfaction. This survey accounts for two thirds of the score. The other third is based on a Culture Audit, capturing detailed demographics, pay and benefit programs, management philosophy, methods of internal communications, opportunities as well as compensation and diversity issues [1]. When looking at the results of this ranking, one immediately notices that the same company names have appeared over and over again among the top ten or top twenty over the previous years. This paper takes a deeper look at some of these companies, their corporate culture and the way they treat their employees. Furthermore, it tries to determine whether some measures or ideas exist that are common to all these companies and help increasing job satisfaction. From that, propositions are given of how these measures can be applied by other companies, independent of the industry they are doing business in.

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: A, Union Graduate College, course: Money, Markets and Banking, language: English, abstract: A credit default swap is essentially an insurance contract to hedge credit risk. It is a type of derivative whose value depends on the likelihood of a company defaulting. In this type of derivative two parties enter a contract where one party agrees to pay another in the event of a company defaulting on bond payments (also known as a credit event) for a premium or spread. CDS played a pivotal role in the recent financial crisis. It is also due to CDS that the crisis in the US housing market grew to a danger for the global capital markets. They were mainly responsible for the fall of insurance giant AIG and other turmoil over the course of the financial crisis. In this paper the nature and history of CDS is examinzed and their role in the financial crisis analyzed.

Scientific Study from the year 2011 in the subject Didactics - Business economics, Economic Pedagogy, grade: A, Union Graduate College, language: English, abstract: iZoca.com is currently a hyper-local social networking site. It combines elements of social networks and organizational tools. In contrast to other social networks like the market dominating Facebook, iZoca is not based on relations between individuals but on group affiliations. By giving their zip code members become part of their local community and can access the latest local news and information about events in their local area. They can form and join groups, in which activities can be planned, managed and promoted to the public. One of the most important features of iZoca is the integrated personal calendar. However, the company is struggling with difficulties. Membership is growing very slowly. Only about 4000 people are currently signed up at iZoca.com. Revenues generated by ads on the website are scarce. For these reasons, we propose a strategy shift. iZoca should enter the market of Learning Mangement Systems (LMS) by partnering with an existing LMS. With its key features, the group and community structure and the shared calendar, it has the potential to satisfy needs of students and colleges that are currently either not or only insufficiently addressed by existing players in the market such as Blackboard or Moodle s Joule. The entire college could be mirrored virtually in a community on iZoca. Classes could be organized in groups, over which students and teachers can interact and communicate about all issues related to the class. Teachers could upload the syllabus or assignments, students could hand in assignments by uploading. Through the integrated calendar, group members would always have an up-to-date overview of the class schedule or due dates for assignments. Other things like campus events could also be organized in groups directly on the LMS platform. Through a smartphone application, students could also access the latest information about classes and campus events directly over their smartphones. These examples show that iZoca could clearly offer benefits to college students. However, before any actions are undertaken into this direction, it is important to put any assumptions about customer needs on a fact-based fundament. To accomplish this, a survey has been conducted with college students about their perceptions of their college s current LMS and about their appraisal of the features iZoca could offer. The results of this survey are presented in this research paper.
