The historic encounter around 1911 between the composer Arnold Schönberg and the painter Wassily Kandinsky occurred at a moment when the first wild revolts against traditional art, Dada and Futurism, had just manifested themselves. Independently of those sometimes spectacular activities, both Schönberg and Kandinsky had already concluded that the material and the compositional methods they had relied on in the past were exhausted and did not satisfy the development of their artistic ideas. Vermutlich jeder, der sich intensiver mit zeitgenössischer Musik beschäftigt, hat mehr als einmal die "Darmstädter Beiträge zur Neuen Musik" konsultiert. Die schlichten grünen Bände mit der großen weißen Schrift trugen ohne Frage auch dazu bei, dass sich die Darmstädter Ferienkurse als maßgebliches Theorie- und Diskursforum etablieren konnten. Dabei waren dei Sammelbände weniger als wissenschaftliche Beiträge gedacht, sondern bereits in ihrer Konzeption durch Wolfgang Steinecke, den Begründer der Reihe, als Quellensammlung angelegt: als verschriftlicher Rückblick auf zentrale Positionen des jeweils vorangegangenen Kursjahrgangs. Genau zwei Jahrzehnte nach dem letzten erschienenen Band wird jetzt die Edition der Reihe wieder aufgenommen: Der 21. Band der "Darmstädter Beiträge zur Neuen Musik" setzt einen Akzent ganz im ursprünglichen Sinne, indem hier wichtige Vorträge, Texte und Diskussionen der Ferienkurse des Jahres 2010 versammelt werden.
