This handbook offers all aspects of Overhead Transmission Lines as the backbone of networks of electrical power. The content of the book includes, after a historical flash-back: Planning and management concepts, electrical and mechanical considerations, influences of the weather, and on the environment, detailed design of all line components, construction and maintenance aspects, line optimization, and asset management, as well as a comparison between overhead lines and underground cables.

The book was written by more than 50 experts and assembled through the Cigré study committee on Overhead Lines. This guarantees valuable exchange and dissemination of unbiased information for technical but also non-technical audiences.  

Composite insulators have been in service in electric power networks successfully for more than 40 years, and now up to the highest operating voltages. The present book extensively covers such insulators with a special focus on today’s prevalent material, which is silicone rubber. It includes a detailed description of the electrical and mechanical characteristics of composite insulators, their material properties, their design as well as typical applications and service experience. Particular attention is given to the mechanical behavior of long rod and post insulators, insulated cross-arms, interphase spacers and hollow core apparatus insulators. The state of the art on manufacturing procedures and the selection and dimensioning of the necessary power arc and corona fittings is presented as well as evaluation tests of “old” insulators, i.e. insulators after many years in service. The closing chapter deals with an up to date overview of test procedures and IEC standards.

The selection and the contents of the various subjects covered in this book are based on the authors’ more than thirty years of experience with a renowned European manufacturer of composite insulators and string hardware. Their long and active participation in the relevant CIGRE and IEC working bodies adding to this experience. This book is therefore addressed to practicing engineers from electric utilities and the industry, as well as to academic professionals.

Verbundisolatoren werden seit nahezu vierzig Jahren in verschiedenen Anwendungen der Energieübertragung und heute auch bis in die Höchstspannungsebenen erfolgreich eingesetzt. Mit diesem Buch wird eine umfassende und aktuelle Vorstellung von Verbundisolatoren mit dem speziellen Fokus auf Silikongummi als Mantelwerkstoff geliefert. Es erfolgt eine Beschreibung der mechanischen und elektrotechnischen Grundlagen dieser Isolatoren und es wird detailliert auf wesentliche Teilaspekte von der Auswahl der Werkstoffe über Dimensionierung bis zu deren konkreten Anwendung in den Netzen eingegangen. Dazu zählen das mechanische Verhalten von Leitungsisolatoren, Stützisolatoren, Phasenabstandshaltern und Hohlisolatoren. Der Stand der Technik für die Auswahl von Fertigungsverfahren und von Materialien wird erläutert und bewährte Regeln für die Auslegung von Korona- und Lichtbogenschutzarmaturen werden vorgestellt. Beispiele, wie Verbundisolatoren nach deren Entnahme aus dem Netz bewertet werden können und eine Übersicht zu aktuellen Normen bzw. Prüfverfahren runden den Informationsgehalt umfassend ab.

Die Themenauswahl und die Buchdarstellungen sind durch das mehr als dreißigjährige Know-how der Autoren bei einem führenden europäischen Hersteller von Verbundisolatoren und von kompletten Isolatorenketten geprägt, die von einer langen Mitarbeit in IEC-Normungsgremien und in CIGRE-Arbeitsgruppen begleitet wurde. Die Beschreibungen des Buchinhaltes wurden praxisnah dargestellt. So wendet sich das Buch an Ingenieure der Elektrizitätswirtschaft aber auch an Materialwissenschaftler und dient als umfassende Einführung wie als Nachschlagewerk für den praktizierenden Fachmann.
