Fishes are the most abundant vertebrate on earth. They are one of the most ancient, diverse and unique fauna. Not only are they a great source of income generation and economic returns but also a delicious food option having good protein value. They are very sensitive to any changes in the habitat and reflect it back. Global quandaries of the world include climate change and pollution and the fishes are no less affected. The bearings of stress on fish make it an effective tool for pollution and biomonitoring studies. How the fishes respond to stressors is critically variable and requires exhaustive experimental research at physiological and molecular level. Molecular biological research and study of stress physiology in fishes is gaining a quick momentum in light of unabated population ebullition. Fishes can thrive in diverse habitats and extreme climatic regime. Proper fish management at commercial level requires that the stress physiology of fish be fathomed and fish genetics be comprehended. These areas of research make us visualize the improvement of fish genes which will consequently improve the fish quality as food. In order to feed millions, man has to depend upon fishes as alternate source of food and therefore, fishery biologists are focusing their thrust area of research in these fields. We hope that the research articles deliberated in these ISCA 2019 proceedings will be of immense interest to the fishery biologists, molecular biologists, geneticists, aquaculturists and last but not the least, young and dynamic researchers and fish enthusiasts.

The aquatic ecosystems such as lakes, ponds, rivers, wetlands, reservoirs, estuaries and oceans along with their disparate flora and fauna form a splendid synthesis of a unique life. They together are instrumental in sustaining the life on earth. Their role in regulating the biosphere cannot be disregarded. The abundance and variety of life in the various aquatic habitats enriches the biodiversity in general and looks after the well being of life residing on land in particular. Water is without doubt the elixir of life but with the inevitable anthropogenic influence, it is undergoing depletion and deterioration. The aquatic biodiversity is very crucial in providing us the food, atmospheric oxygen, running the biogeochemical cycles, redeemer in food shortage and protection against the global climate change. The research articles, reviews and case studies on the plankton, benthos, fish reproductive physiology, seasonal variations, water quality, sediment quality, abiotic parameters presented in these ISCA proceedings 2019 focuses on the qualitative and quantitative maintenance of not only the aquatic ecosystems but also the indispensable animal and plant life residing in it. Conserving and maintaining our aquatic ecosystems will go a long way in not only providing us the food, clean water, jobs, economy and tourism enhancement but also save us from climate change, floods, earthquakes and other cataclysms. The papers presented focused onto the damage that may be caused due to toxic chemicals and its amelioration by the use of safe and effective plant products. The use of herbal products has been a boon to Indian culture since ages. The studies of use of extracts of medicinal plants gave us the understandings that the results are surprising and are true and proved that herbal medicine and other forms of alternative medicine are becoming a new popular way of staying healthy. However, the recent stretch of science and technology has gifted us to think in the direction to the use of nanotechnology as the modern concept of disease prevention and control.
