Unsere Kenntnisse der Wirbelsaulenerkrankungen und ihrer Darstellung im Ront- genbild haben sich zwar in den letzten Jahrzehnten erheblich erweitert, doch sind nach wie vor noch widerspruchliche Auffassungen vorhanden, welche die Lucken unseres Wissens aufdecken. Es sei nur an die Genese der "Spondylolisthesis" oder an die Kontro- verse "persistierende Wirbelkorperepiphyse" - "vordere Kantenabtrennung" erinnert. Ein intensiveres Studium verdient aber auch die Genese der unspezifischen Spondyli- tiden - sowohl im Kindesalter als auch beim Erwachsenen -, wobei dem Nachweis der Grunderkrankung mit allen zur Verfugung stehenden Methoden eine besondere Bedeu- tung zukommt. Fur die Spondylitis tuberculosa sind neue therapeutische Moglichkeiten durch die operative Behandlung eroffnet worden, deren Indikation und Folgezustande nur aufgrund grosser eigener Erfahrungen von einem auf diesem Sektor besonders kompetenten Chirurgen dargestellt werden konnen. Die parasitaren Erkrankungen konnen heute in den meisten Fallen richtig und fruh- zeitiger erkannt werden.Hier darf von der zukunftigen Forschung eine Verbesserung der medikamentosen Behandlungsmoglichkeiten erwartet werden, zumal gewisse Ansatze schon heute sichtbar sind. DIETHELM Preface Our knowledge of spinal diseases and their X-ray images has certainly been enormously extended in recent decades, however, there still exist contradictory opinions which merely serve to cover up the gaps in our knowledge. Two good examples would be the genesis of "spondylolisthesis", or ree the controversy surrounding "persistent vertebral epiphyses", and "vertebral body edge separation".

In 1932 there appeared the work of SCHMORL and JUNGHANNS, Die gesunde und kranke Wirbelsiiule im Rontgenbild, which laid the foundations of diagnostic radiology of the spine. Since that time the discipline has been extended and refined in a systematic manner and our knowledge has been greatly enriched by the large number of monographs in which leading experts have assembled additional data. An encyclopedic treatment of all that is currently known requires not only that reference be made to all work published since 1932 in order to reveal the problems that remain but also that a serious attempt be made to contribute to the solution of such problems. For this reason, Professor TONDURY and Professor THEILER of Zurich, who know more than anyone else about the ontogeny of the spine, have been invited to display their erudition in this field. Should contra- dictions or divergent opinions on certain points be revealed through this confrontation with radiologically obtained findings, so much the better; the effect of this could only be to spur workers in both disciplines on to more advanced research.We have only to recall how in Goethe's time the premaxilla was still the subject of controversy, yet this great man pursuing his studies in comparative anatomy and anthropology was able to prove its existence beyond all doubt. Die Rontgendiagnostik der Weichteile hat in den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten erheblich an Bedeutung gewonnen. Eine Zusammenfassung des heutigen Wissensstandes in einem geschlossenen Handbuchband war daher wunschenswert. Bei der Durchfiihrung erschien es den Herausgebern jedoch zweckmaBiger, die Erkrankungen der peripheren Arterien und Venen in groBerem Zusammenhang mit dem Herzen und den groBen GefaBen im Band X, 3 abzuhandeln, die Lymphographie und Lymphadenographie aber wegen ihrer Sonderstellung im Rahmen der Weichteildiagnostik zu belassen. Hierdurch wurde es moglich, unter Vermeidung von Wiederholungen der eigentlichen Weichteildiagnostik einen groBeren Raum zur Verfugung zu stellen und die Akzente so zu setzen, daB auch dieser Band als eine relativ geschlossene Einheit angesehen werden kann. Therefore a summary of present knowledge on the subject in a single textbook was desirable.In compiling such a summary, however, it seemed more appropriate to the editors to discuss the diseases of the peripheral arteries and veins together with the heart and large vessels in Volume X, 3 and to leave lymphography and lymphadenography in the frame of soft structure diagnosis because of their particular nature. In this way it became possible to allow more space to actual soft structure diagnosis and to place the emphasis in such a manner that this volume as well can be considered a relatively complete unit.
