Several significant additions have been made to the second edition, including the operator method of calculating the bremsstrahlung cross-section, the calcualtion of the probabilities of photon-induced pair production and photon decay in a magnetic field, the asymptotic form of the scattering amplitudes at high energies, inelastic scattering of electrons by hadrons, and the transformation of electron-positron pairs into hadrons.

The second part of ''Statistical Physics'' deals with the quantum theory of the condensed state of matter. This volume is essentially an entirely new book, based on the large amount of new material which has become available in statistical physics since'' Part 1'' was published.

This volume is mainly concerned with a systematic development of the theory of plasmas, the authority being firmly rooted in the pioneering work of Landau. Corresponding results are also given for partially ionized plasmas, relativistic plasmas, degenerate or non-ideal plasmas and solid state plasmas.

A comprehensive textbook covering not only the ordinary theory of the deformation of solids, but also some topics not usually found in textbooks on the subject, such as thermal conduction and viscosity in solids.

Evgenii Mikhailovich Lifshitz is perhaps best known for his long association with his mentor Lev D Landau, with whom he co-wrote the classic Course of Theoretical Physics, but he was a noted and respected Soviet physicist in his own right. Born in the Ukraine to a scientific family, his long and distinguished career will be remembered for three things - his collaboration with Landau on the internationally acclaimed Course of Theoretical Physics, his work as editor of the Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics, and his scientific papers. As well as his work with Landau, E\M\Lifshitz collaborated with many noted Soviet scientists such as I\M\Khalatnikov, I\E\Dyzaloshinskii, V\V\Sudakov, V\A\Belinskii and the editor of this book, L\P\Pitaevskii. Many of the papers presented in this book include their contribution. Collected together they give a comprehensive and penetrating insight into the man and his work, clearly showing Lifshitz''s contribution to physics and the influences on his work.

The chapters on ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism and on magnetohydrodynamics have been substantially enlarged and eight other chapters have additional sections.

Resumiendo las características de su contenido podemos decir que este noveno tomo del Curso de Física teórica trata de la teoría cuántica del estado condensado de la materia. Se inicia con una exposición detallada de la teoría de los líquidos cuánticos de Born y Fermi.

Este primer tomo del Curso de Física teórica está dedicado naturalmente a los fundamentos del tema, es decir a la Mecánica clásica newtoniana y contiene los problemas fundamentales de la Mecánica teórica: ecuaciones del movimiento del sólido y ecuaciones canónicas, y aborda los problemas clásicos de la teoría de los choques, así como la teoría de las pequeñas oscilaciones lineales y no lineales.

Objeto del presente libro es la exposición de la teoría de los campos electromagnético y gravitatorio. De acuerdo con el plan general del Curso de Física teórica, no se tratan en este tomo las cuestiones de Electrodinámica de los medios continuos, limitándose a exponer la Electrodinámica microscópica, es decir, la Electrodinámica del vacío y de las cargas puntuales.Los dos últimos capítulos contienen la teoría de los campos gravitatorios, esto es, la teoría general de la relatividad. No se presupone en el lector un conocimiento previo del análisis tensorial, que se expone paralelamente al desarrollo de la teoría.

Junto a los fundamentos de la Mecánica cuántica, se exponen también en el libro sus numerosas aplicaciones en grado considerablemente mayor que el normal en los cursos generales de Mecánica cuántica. Hemos dejado a un lado tan sólo aquellas cuestiones cuyo estudio exigiría de modo esencial el realizar a la vez un detallado análisis de los datos experimentales, lo que inevitablemente se saldría de los límites de la obra.

En particular ha sido posible resolver muchas cuestiones que planteaban los espectros energéticos de los cuerpos macroscópicos y que no resultaban claras hace años. Entre los temas que figuran, más o menos desarrollados, en el presente volumen hay que mencionar en primer lugar la teoría macroscópica de los líquidos formados por bosones y de los constituidos por fermiones que condujo al establecimiento de la nueva Hidrodinámica cuántica.

Este libro tiene por objeto el estudio de la Mecánica de fluidos, es decir, la teoría del movimiento de los líquidos y los gases.La naturaleza del libro viene determinada ampliamente por el hecho de que describe la Mecánica de fluidos como una rama de la Física técnica, y por lo tanto, es notablemente diferente de otros libros de texto escritos sobre el mismo tema.

De este libro, escrito por físicos y destinado a físicos, nos han interesado, naturalmente, cuestiones que de ordinario no se exponen en los cursos de teoría de la elasticidad; tales como, por ejemplo ciertas cuestiones relativas a la conductibilidad térmica y a la viscosidad de los sólidos, o toda una serie de problemas de teoría de las vibraciones elásticas y de las ondas.
