Das zweite Heft der Zeitschrift Expressionismus widmet sich der performativen Seite expressionistischer Kunst. Expressionistische Arbeiten sind stark auf die Veränderung von Kunst und Gesellschaft ausgerichtet – ein Ziel, das sie sowohl programmatisch formulieren als auch aktiv umsetzen wollen. Entsprechend hoch ist die Zahl an Versuchen, spezifisch performative Formen von Kunst zu entwickeln, die sich auf mehrere Kunstformen erstrecken.In vier Sektionen wird diese Breite mit internationaler Perspektive aufgezeigt. Das Heft versammelt Aufsätze zum deutschen wie zum spanischen Avantgardetheater, zur Beziehung von Tanz und Lyrik sowie zur performativen Ausrichtung der Bildenden Kunst in Polen. Außerdem wird der Blick über das expressionistische Jahrzehnt hinaus erweitert, wenn es um die Einflüsse des Expressionismus auf den amerikanischen Film der 1920er und 1930er Jahre geht und ein aktueller Versuch vorgestellt wird, wie man expressionistische Texte performativ wieder zum Leben erwecken kann.

Nicht nur als radikalster Gegenentwurf zur bürgerlichen Kultur, sondern auch als ein Hauptmerkmal expressionistischer Ästhetik an sich kann die Thematisierung von psychischen Extremzuständen und ''Geisteskrankheit'' angesehen werden. Nachdem um die Jahrhundertwende die Psychoanalyse Gesellschaft, Individuum und Sexualität unter gänzlich neuen Prämissen dachte, beschäftigte sich der nur wenig später aufkommende Expressionismus in Kunst, Literatur und besonders dem neuen Medium Film mit psychischen Vorgängen, sexueller Motivik, Traum und Rauschzuständen. Aber auch der ''Irre'' und seine scheinbar unverstellte und nicht genormte Wahrnehmung von Welt und Subjekt sowie sein Außenseiterstatus sind besonders häufig vorkommende Bilder und Konzepte.Von dem bewusst zugespitzten Stichwort ''Wahnsinn'' ausgehend möchte die sechste Ausgabe von Expressionismus nicht nur die Darstellung und Funktion psychischer Krankheiten in der expressionistischen Kunst behandeln, sondern auch die Frage stellen, welche Theorien für die Diskussion leitend sind. Die Beiträge analysieren einerseits die Darstellung und Funktion von Wahnsinn und ''Geisteskrankheit'' in Literatur, bildender Kunst und Film. Sie werfen andererseits den Blick auf medizindiskursgeschichtliche Aspekte wie Schizophrenie und Psychosomatik und gehen den expressionistischen Spuren in der therapeutischen Kunstproduktion von Laien in psychiatrischen Heilanstalten nach.

Der Expressionismus gilt als eine Kunstrichtung der Extreme, wobei sich nicht selten künstlerischer Ausdruck und Lebensrealität (bzw. Selbstinszenierung) der dahinterstehenden Kunstschaffenden in diesem Punkt überschneiden. So gehört der Konsum von Rauschgiften wie Morphium fast zum guten Ton in den Künstlerkreisen des expressionistischen Jahrzehnts. Rausch ist aber auch etwas, das sich als ästhetischer Effekt expressionistischer Werke beschreiben lässt. Nicht zuletzt zeigen sich die expressionistischen Künstlerinnen und Künstler – im übertragenen Sinn – etwa fas-ziniert vom Rausch der Großstadt und dem damit verbundenen neuen Lebensgefühl, das – in An-lehnung an den Futurismus – häufig auch über Geschwindigkeit definiert wird.Diese Ausgabe von Expressionismus widmet sich den diversen Spielarten und Reflexio-nen des expressionistischen Rauschs, die u. a. anhand der Werke von Carl Einstein, James Ensor, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Oskar Panizza und Gustav Sack untersucht werden.

Jenny Brosinski’s (b. Celle, 1984; lives and works in Berlin) paintings in large formats look like uncoordinated abstract compositions with traces of wear deliberately left in place. This brings their materiality to the fore and reveals the creative process. Expressive oil paint on unprimed canvas, spray-painted lines, typographic elements, shoeprints, or pieces of masking tape on the canvas: on the one hand, these are experiments and statements; on the other hand, they are engagements with painting as such.The artist added sculpture to her repertoire in 2019, making figurative and sometimes colourfully painted imaginary beasts in bronze or stone - more evidence of her subtle sense of humour, which also manifests itself in her pictures and especially in their titles.

The paintings and installations of Cornelia Baltes straddle the divide between abstraction and figuration. Her pictures are inspired by observations of mundane details – apparel, body parts, or facial expressions – that she pares down to simple lines and shapes. She often interrogates the painted pictures's function, by painting on the wall beyond the canvas, by hanging a picture in the middle of the room as an object in its own right or laying it our on the floor.

Nicola Staeglich transforms colour and traces of the act of painting into complex pictorial spaces that exude light and make time visible. Using an extra-wide brush, she applies luminous oil paints to (semi-) transparent foils and solid support media made from acrylic glass. Each movement of her body leaves a distinct mark on the paintings. Once the works are placed in the exhibition space, they absorb their environment and ambient light as well as the eye.The artist’s experimental approach generates a rich dynamic: paint hovers in mid-air, disembodied, while a constant oscillation between colour and surface, between pictorial body and setting unlocks novel dimensions in space and time. The picture continually coalesces in the eye of the beholder, metamorphosing as the angle of incidence shifts and the mind parses the traces and strata of paint. Even in printed form, Staeglich’s works convey a rousing vitality.The catalogue accompanies Staeglich’s solo exhibition at Städtische Galerie Waldkraiburg.
