As demographic trends shift toward an aging population, there is a growing need for improved mental health treatment for older adults. With depression as the leading mental health concern in later life, one of the greatest challenges for treatment providers is the wide variability of life circumstances that accompany depressive symptoms for clients across outpatient mental health, integrated primary care, and inpatient psychiatric settings.Treating Later-Life Depression: Clinician Guide outlines culturally responsive practices that target the contexts and drivers/antecedents of depression in middle-aged and older adults. Clinicians can choose research-supported modules from the accompanying Workbook that fit the needs of their clients (i.e. chronic pain, sleep problems, anxiety, experiences of loss). This practical guide reflects continuing international scientific and clinical advances in applying CBT to age-related problems using individual and group formats, with clinician-tested recommendations for telehealth practice. With the flexible clinical tools provided in this guide, practitioners can personalize the application of change strategies, including behavioral activation, relaxation training, self-compassion, cognitive reappraisal, and communication skills training among others. Case examples are also provided from a range of disciplines (e.g., clinical psychology, psychiatry, social work, counseling, marriage and family therapy, nursing, occupational therapy and recreational specialists) to illustrate application in busy clinical practices. The guide closes with aging-friendly assessment tools and other resources to support ongoing professional development.Treating Later-Life Depression, Clinician Guide is an indispensable resource for all behavioral health providers who wish to help diverse aging clients thrive effectively and efficiently in a daily life that is true to their values and personal strengths.

Depression is a common problem for individuals in their senior years. Conservative estimates suggest that more than five million seniors over 65 are suffering from severe depression. How can you help your older clients manage depressed mood? This Therapist Guide outlines a three-phase program based on the principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy. Designed specifically for use with older adults, this treatment generally is delivered over the course of 16 - 20 sessions. In Phase 1 of the intervention, clients are introduced to the program and are encouraged to develop goals for therapy. The focus of Phase 2 is on helping the client acquire the cognitive and behavioral skills needed to meet the therapy goals. It is during this phase that clients learn the benefits of participating in pleasant activities, how to challenge negative thinking, how to manage feelings of anger and frustration through relaxation, and how to improve communication skills. Phase 3 deals with termination and how to maintain the gains obtained in therapy. Step-by-step instructions for administering therapy are provided in a user-friendly format, along with information on screening and assessment. A separate chapter on age-related issues that may affect treatment guides you through potentially difficult clinical situations. Complete with sample dialogues, at-home assignments, and lists of materials needed, this comprehensive guide includes all the tools necessary for facilitating effective treatment.TreatmentsThatWork a represents the gold standard of behavioral healthcare interventions!BL All programs have been rigorously tested in clinical trials and are backed by years of researchBL A prestigious scientific advisory board, led by series Editor-In-Chief David H. It gives me great pleasure to witness continued growth in the application of cognitive and behavioral theories and therapies to more diverse populations – including, in this volume, their application to the mental health problems of later life. Evidence continues to accumulate, demonstrating that these are effective in treating a broad range of elderly patient groups. This is the first book to examine a number of these evidence-based interventions currently in use with older adults. The editors have assembled chapters developed in many of the leading clinical and clinical research programs focusing on elderly patients, both in this country and in the UK. Since the emphasis of this volume is primarily on clinical appli- tion, each author group was asked to discuss the empirical data for the treatment strategies it is using with the specific patient group selected. Typically, this was followed by a detailed description of treatment procedures that were then ill- trated by one or more clinical examples. The book begins by examining the treatment of depressive and anxiety dis- ders and then moves on to more complicated and/or serious disorders, including schizophrenia and other psychoses, suicidal behavior, personality disorders, bipolar disorders, dementia, and complicated bereavement. A chapter on the problems and issues in training therapists to use evidence-based interventions effectively is also included, along with a chapter discussing the implications of Medicare policies and guidelines for service delivery.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is now well established as an effective treatment for a range of mental health problems, but for clinicians working with older clients, there are particular issues that need to be addressed. Topics covered include the need to build a therapeutic relationship, dealing with stereotypical thinking about ageing, setting realistic expectations in the face of deteriorating medical conditions, maintaining hope when faced with difficult life events such as the loss of a spouse, disability, etc., and dealing with the therapist''s own fears about ageing. Illustrated throughout with case studies, practical solutions and with a troubleshooting section, this is essential reading for all clinical psychologists, psychiatrists and related health professionals who work with older people. * Authors are world authorities on depression and psychotherapy with older people * First book to be published on CBT with older people * Case studies and examples used throughout to illustrate the method and the problems of older people
