Amting Directorate General Information Society, European Commission, Brussels Under the 4th Framework of European Research, the European Systems and Soft­ ware Initiative (ESSI) was part of the ESPRIT Programme. This initiative funded more than 470 projects in the area' of software and system process improvements. The majority of these projects were process improvement experiments carrying out and taking up new development processes, methods and technology within the software development process of a company. In addition, nodes (centres of exper­ tise), European networks (organisations managing local activities), training and dissemination actions complemented the process improvement experiments. ESSI aimed at improving the software development capabilities of European enterprises. It focused on best practice and helped European companies to develop world class skills and associated technologies to build the increasingly complex and varied systems needed to compete in the marketplace. The dissemination activities were designed to build a forum, at European level, to exchange information and knowledge gained within process improvement ex­ periments. Their major objective was to spread the message and the results of experiments to a wider audience, through a variety of different channels. The European Experience Exchange ~UR~X) project has been one of these dis­ semination activities within the European Systems and Software Initiative.~UR~X has collected the results of practitioner reports from numerous workshops in Europe and presents, in this series of books, the results of Best Practice achieve­ ments in European Companies over the last few years.

CAiSE 2000 was the 12th in the series of International Conferences on Advanced Information Systems Engineering. In the year 2000 the conference returned to Stockholm where it was organized the very first time. Since that year, 1989, the CAiSE conferences have developed into an important forum for the presentation and exchange of research results and practical experiences within the field of Information Systems Engineering. The objective of the CAiSE conference series is to bring together researchers and practitioners in the field of information systems engineering to meet annually in order to discuss evolving research issues and applications in this field. The CAiSE conference series also aims to provide an opportunity for young scientists to establish relationships with senior scientists in their areas of interest. Stockholm is an important center of research and development for some of the leading IT and communications companies in Europe and indeed, in the world. In tune with this environment, a major theme of CAiSE 2000 was "information systems and services in a digitized world". This theme reflects the vast improvements in communication technology, including the increasing use of Internet and WWW, that has taken place over the last years, and that has led to better communication and easier information access in general. In addition, this development has initiated changes in the way organizations cooperate and trade.

The Nordic Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE) is an annual international conference for users, developers and researchers of information systems technology and methodology. A distinctive characteristic of the CAiSE conference series is the objective to appeal to advanced practitioners as well as to researchers, and to promote communication between the two groups. In this second CAiSE conference, the program was divided into two types of sessions that were not run in parallel: Technical Paper sessions, with formally reviewed technical papers, and Practice and Experience sessions, with invited speakers and panel discussions. The proceedings include the formally reviewed technical papers and abstracts of the invited presentations. The technical papers present important international (mainly European) work in Information Systems Engineering within such areas as conceptual modelling, prototyping, requirements engineering, design support, software process modelling, tool design, and tool experiences. The abstracts of invited speakers' presentations give an indication of current best industrial practice.

Klimatpoliktiken präglas alltför ofta av tro snarare än av vetande. I denna bok ges handfasta ekonomiska analyser. Modellresultat kombineras med kvalitativa bedömningar av såväl ekonomisk som social och politisk art. Mot bakgrund av Kyotoavtalet 1997 tecknas konturerna till en ekonomiskt effektiv klimatpolitik. Författarna beräknar kostnaderna för alternativa internationella och nationella klimatpolitiska åtgärder. De pekar på anpassningar och kostnader för de företag som vållar utsläpp. Med tanke på den förvirring som präglar klimatpolitiken behandlas också den politiska beslutsprocessen för att klargöra villkoren för att rationalitet och effektivitet ska styra. Författare till boken, som är en sammanfattning av ett treårigt forskningsprojekt vid SNS, är Lars Bergman, professor vid Handelshögskolan i Stockholm och Marian Radetzki, professor i nationalekonomi vid Luleå tekniska universitet och tidigare forskningsledare vid SNS.

Och så förstås det märkliga i att leva sitt liv som plastmugg och skratta vid sin mors kista. Lars Bergman är dataingenjör och skribent med förkärlek för det djupsinniga och lite underfundiga i livet. Han har bland annat hörts i närradio, skrivit tidningsartiklar och varit medförfattare till en andaktsbok. Bergmans Bryderier är hans första egna bok, ursprungligen utgiven år 2016. Detta är den andra, något omarbetade upplagan.
