This book presents a curated collection of cutting-edge research and practical insights into one of the most pressing global challenges of our time: securing water under a changing climate. Framed around the need for adaptive strategies to foster sustainable and resilient development, it explores the multifaceted dimensions of water security through an integrated lens that bridges science, policy, and practice. Structured into eight thematic parts, each part comprises multiple chapters contributed by leading researchers and practitioners from around the world, offering a rich tapestry of perspectives, methodologies, and real-world experiences. The book intentionally balances technical rigor with policy relevance and practical application, making it a valuable resource for academics, decision-makers, and frontline practitioners alike. It is designed to inspire informed decisions, drive innovation, and catalyze transformative change toward water-secure and climate resilient futures.

The thematic areas of the book discuss the United Nation’s sustainable development goals with a particular focus on Goal 6 (“Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation”) and Goal 13 (“Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts”).

This book summarizes the key findings of a five-year interdisciplinary research project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research and Education (BMBF). It serves as a typical case study for a rapidly growing and developing urban center – Da Nang City, which is surrounded by remote areas characterized by increasing migration and limited development. A number of German and Vietnamese universities and international institutions participated in the project, contributing their particular expertise to assess the data-scarce region under study, two provinces in central Vietnam with a combined area of ca. 12,000 km².
