Richard Strauss is an outlier in the context of twentieth century music. Some consider him a composer of the late romantic period, while others declare him a traitor of modernity for his role in National Socialism. Despite the controversy surrounding him, Strauss's works--even beyond his most well-known operas Elektra and Rosenkavalier--are present in the repertories of concert halls worldwide and continue to enjoy large audiences. The details of the composer's life, however, remain shrouded in mystery and gossip. Laurenz Lütteken's Strauss presents a fresh approach to understanding this elusive composer's life and works. Dispensing with stereotypes and sensationalism, it reveals Strauss to be a sensitive intellectual and representative of modernity, with all light and shade of the turn of the twentieth century.

Where previous accounts of the Renaissance have not fully acknowledged the role that music played in this decisive period of cultural history, Laurenz Lütteken merges historical music analysis with the analysis of the other arts to provide a richer context for the emergence and evolution of creative cultures across civilizations. This fascinating panorama foregrounds music as a substantial component of the era and considers musical works and practices in a wider cultural-historical context. Among the topics surveyed are music's relationship to antiquity, the position of music within systems of the arts, the emergence of the concept of the musical work, as well as music's relationship to the theory and practice of painting, literature, and architecture. What becomes clear is that the Renaissance gave rise to many musical concepts and practices that persist to this day, whether the figure of the composer, musical institutions, and modes of musical writing and memory.

Ein Sinn, der verborgen oder enthüllt werden kann, ist eine der zentralen Denkfiguren der Neuzeit. Das betrifft auch die Frage, was Musik eigentlich sei. Je stärker man darüber nachgedacht hat, desto brüchiger, changierender ist die Annahme von einem substantiellen Wesenskern der Musik geworden. In diesem Buch geht es nicht um ästhetische oder theoretische Überlegungen dazu, sondern um die Frage, ob und auf welche Weise komponierte Musik sich selbst zum Gegenstand macht und so möglicherweise etwas von ihrem Kern preisgibt. Die optischen Metaphern von Verhüllung und Enthüllung erweisen sich dabei als ebenso hilfreich wie anschaulich. In einer Reihe von Beispielen, die vom 17. bis in die Gegenwart reichen, wird das Phänomen in seiner ganzen Vielfalt beschrieben. Dabei geht es nicht nur um Opern von Mozart bis Strauss, sondern auch um Monteverdis Vokalmusik, Haydns „Schöpfung“, die Sinfonien Bruckners oder Ligetis Etüden.

The number of eponymous female characters in Handel's work is remarkable, from the first opera Almira (1705) to the last melodramma Deidamia (1740), supplemented by Esther, Deborah and Athalia. In the contributions of the GHB 2016, the female figure is traced in the music of Handel's time, guided by the central aesthetic terms 'sensitive', 'heroic' and 'sublime'. In addition, there are studies by Hans Joachim Marx and Ton Koopman, in addition to the usual bibliography and communications from the Göttinger Handel Society. V.

The Göttingen Handel Contributions (GHB) are published as a yearbook and are published by Laurenz Lütteken and Wolfgang Sandberger on behalf of the Göttingen Handel Society. With Oskar Hagen's Rodelinde pioneering work, opera took center stage at the first Göttingen Handel Festival in 1920. The symposium marking the centenary was therefore dedicated to the topic of opera as a business, from the interaction between aesthetic judgment and commerce, to capitalist business structures and the content implemented in the libretti, to the most expensive aspect of the opera enterprise, the singers. Volume XXIII contains all the lectures at the symposium as well as the keynote lecture by Wolfgang Sandberger, which on the occasion of the anniversary traces the continuities and breaks in the history of the festival. As always, the volume is supplemented by the bibliography on Handel literature and the communications from the Göttingen Handel Society.

The Göttingen Handel Festival had to be canceled in the anniversary year 2020, apart from a few digital substitute events, like almost all other music festivals. This also affected the annual symposium and the lecture, which each make up the main part of the GHB. Nevertheless, there are good reasons why the Handel Society decided to keep the GHB published on a regular basis. The present volume therefore brings together, inspired by the anniversary year, five independent contributions that are dedicated to particular aspects of Handel's reception in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This includes a documentation of the Göttingen anniversary exhibition from 2020. Oskar Hagen's text adaptation of Handel's 'Rodelinda', which was created for the Göttingen performance in 1920, will also be republished for the occasion.

Laurenz Lüttekens pointierte Essays, gerichtet an ein breites Publikum, laden zu Erkundungen und Reflexionen über den unendlichen Gegenstand Musik vom späten Mittelalter bis in die Gegenwart ein. Dabei stehen Texte zu einzelnen Werken im Mittelpunkt, nicht im Sinne von Kommentaren, sondern von grundsätzlichen Erwägungen, die sich am konkreten Detail entzünden. Sie werfen Schlaglichter auf zentrale Fragen, Zusammenhänge und Denkformen der jeweiligen Zeit.

Der „Ring des Nibelungen“ von Richard Wagner ist auch 150 Jahre nach der Uraufführung des gesamten Zyklus eine Herausforderung. Dieser Band ist eine Einladung, sich auf dieses Werk aus neuen Perspektiven einzulassen. Er richtet sich bewusst an einen größeren Leserkreis.  Neben Texten zum „Ring“ finden sich weitere zu Wagners ideologischem Standort, zur Rolle von Goethes „Weltendrama“ „Faust“, zur Frage von Religion und Utopie sowie zum Gedanken des Exils. Es handelt sich um pointierte Essays, in denen Wagners Prägung durch Vormärz und Revolution im Zentrum steht, nicht so sehr der später behauptete, jedoch nicht wirklich belegbare „Bruch“. Vielmehr wird zur Überbrückung der Distanz zwischen Revolution, Scheitern und Utopie Hegels Denkfigur der „Aufhebung“ bemüht. Dabei stehen stets Wagners umfassender Musikbegriff und dessen Bedeutung für die konkrete Beschaffenheit der Partituren im Vordergrund.
