This is the second edition of the now definitive text on partial differential equations (PDE). It offers a comprehensive survey of modern techniques in the theoretical study of PDE with particular emphasis on nonlinear equations. Its wide scope and clear exposition make it a great text for a graduate course in PDE. For this edition, the author has made numerous changes, including a new chapter on nonlinear wave equations, more than 80 new exercises, several new sections,a significantly expanded bibliography.About the First Edition: ""I have used this book for both regular PDE and topics courses. It has a wonderful combination of insight and technical detail. ... Evans' book is evidence of his mastering of the field and the clarity of presentation."" - Luis Caffarelli, University of Texas""It is fun to teach from Evans' book. It explains many of the essential ideas and techniques of partial differential equations ... Every graduate student in analysis should read it."" - David Jerison, MIT""I use Partial Differential Equations to prepare my students for their Topic exam, which is a requirement before starting working on their dissertation. The book provides an excellent account of PDE's ... I am very happy with the preparation it provides my students."" - Carlos Kenig, University of Chicago""Evans' book has already attained the status of a classic. It is a clear choice for students just learning the subject, as well as for experts who wish to broaden their knowledge ... An outstanding reference for many aspects of the field."" - Rafe Mazzeo, Stanford University

The author surveys a wide collection of techniques for showing the existence of solutions to various nonlinear partial differential equations, especially when strong analytic estimates are unavailable. The overall guiding viewpoint is that when a sequence of approximate solutions converges only weakly, one must exploit the nonlinear structure of the PDE to justify passing to limits. The author concentrates on several areas that are rapidly developing and points to some underlying viewpoints common to them all. Among the several themes in the book are the primary role of measure theory and real analysis (as opposed to functional analysis) and the continual use in diverse settings of low-amplitude, high-frequency periodic test functions to extract useful information. The author uses the simplest problems possible to illustrate various key techniques. Aimed at research mathematicians in the field of nonlinear PDEs, this book should prove an important resource for understanding the techniques being used in this important area of research.

This popular textbook provides a detailed examination of the central assertions of measure theory in n-dimensional Euclidean space, with emphasis upon the roles of Hausdorff measure and capacity in characterizing the fine properties of sets and functions.Measure Theory and Fine Properties of Functions, Second Edition includes many interesting items working mathematical analysts need to know, but are rarely taught. Topics covered include a review of abstract measure theory, including Besicovitch’s covering theorem, Rademacher’s theorem (on the differentiability a.e. of Lipschitz continuous functions), the area and coarea formulas, the precise structure of Sobolev and BV functions, the precise structure of sets of finite perimeter, and Aleksandrov’s theorem (on the twice differentiability a.e. of convex functions). The topics are carefully selected, and the proofs are succinct, but complete. This book provides ideal reading for mathematicians and graduate students in pure and applied mathematics. The authors assume readers are at least fairly conversant with both Lebesgue measure and abstract measure theory, and the expository style reflects this expectation. The book does not offer lengthy heuristics or motivation, but as compensation presents all the technicalities of the proofs. This new Second Edition has been updated to provide corrections and minor edits from the previous Revised Edition, with countless improvements in notation, format and clarity of exposition. Also new is a section on the sub differentials of convex functions, and in addition the bibliography has been updated.

This book provides a quick, but very readable introduction to stochastic differential equations—that is, to differential equations subject to additive "white noise" and related random disturbances. The exposition is strongly focused upon the interplay between probabilistic intuition and mathematical rigour. Topics include a quick survey of measure theoretic probability theory, followed by an introduction to Brownian motion and the Ito stochastic calculus, and finally the theory of stochastic differential equations. The text also includes applications to partial differential equations, optimal stopping problems and options pricing. This book can be used as a text for senior undergraduates or beginning graduate students in mathematics, applied mathematics, physics, financial mathematics, etc., who want to learn the basics of stochastic differential equations. The reader is assumed to be fairly familiar with measure theoretic mathematical analysis, but is not assumed to have any particular knowledge of probability theory (which is rapidly developed in Chapter 2 of the book).

Measure Theory and Fine Properties of Functions, Revised Edition provides a detailed examination of the central assertions of measure theory in n-dimensional Euclidean space. The book emphasizes the roles of Hausdorff measure and capacity in characterizing the fine properties of sets and functions. Topics covered include a quick review of abstract measure theory, theorems and differentiation in ℝn, Hausdorff measures, area and coarea formulas for Lipschitz mappings and related change-of-variable formulas, and Sobolev functions as well as functions of bounded variation. The text provides complete proofs of many key results omitted from other books, including Besicovitch's covering theorem, Rademacher's theorem (on the differentiability a.e. of Lipschitz functions), area and coarea formulas, the precise structure of Sobolev and BV functions, the precise structure of sets of finite perimeter, and Aleksandrov's theorem (on the twice differentiability a.e. of convex functions). This revised edition includes countless improvements in notation, format, and clarity of exposition. Also new are several sections describing the π-λ theorem, weak compactness criteria in L1, and Young measure methods for weak convergence. In addition, the bibliography has been updated.Topics are carefully selected and the proofs are succinct, but complete. This book provides ideal reading for mathematicians and graduate students in pure and applied mathematics.

This volume comprises five extended surveys on the theory of viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear partial differential equations, and some of its most relevant applications to optimal control theory for deterministic and stochastic systems, front propagation, geometric motions and mathematical finance. The volume forms a reference on the subject of viscosity solutions, and the authors are among the most prominent specialists. Potential readers are researchers in nonlinear PDE's, systems theory, and stochastic processes.
