The papers published in this volume were presented at the Second International Conference on Ultra-WidebandiShort-Pulse (UWB/SP) Electromagnetics, ApriIS-7, 1994. To place this second international conference in proper perspective with respect to the first conference held during October 8-10, 1992, at Polytechnic University, some background information is necessary. As we had hoped, the first conference struck a responsive cord, both in timeliness and relevance, among the electromagnetic community 1. Participants at the first conference already inquired whether and when a follow-up meeting was under consideration. The first concrete proposal in this direction was made a few months after the first conference by Prof. A. Terzuoli of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Dayton, Ohio, who has been a strong advocate of time-domain methods and technologies. He initially proposed a follow-up time-domain workshop under AFIT auspices. Realizing that interest in this subject is lodged also at other Air Force installations, we suggested to enlarge the scope, and received in this endeavor the support of Dr. A. Nachman of AFOSR (Air Force Office of Scientific Research), Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C.

As relevant today as it was when it was first published 20 years ago, this book is a classic in the field. Nowhere else can you find more complete coverage of radiation and scattering of waves. The chapter: Asympotic Evaluation of Integrals is considered the definitive source for asympotic techniques. This book is essential reading for engineers, physicists and others involved in the fields of electromagnetics and acoustics. It is also an indispensable reference for advanced engineering courses.

This monograph contains the ceremonials and proceedings of the Workshop / Minisymposium on "Electromagnetics in a Complex World: Challenges and Perspectives", convened at the University of Sannio, Benevento, Italy from February 20-21, 2003, in connection with the bestowal of an honorary Laurea degree on Professor Leopold B. Felsen. The various contributions from scientists and engineers in academy and industry address diverse problems in electromagnetics, either on a broad scale or in particular specialties. The wide-ranging topics and techniques, analytic models (with phenomenologies) and numerical simulations - motivated by actual or potential applications to real-world problems - are intended to stimulate interdisciplinary exchange.

In this monograph, the authors propose a systematic and rigorous treatment of electromagnetic field representations in complex structures. The architecture suggested in this book accommodates use of different numerical methods as well as alternative Green's function representations in each of the subdomains resulting from a partitioning of the overall problem. The subdomains are regions of space where electromagnetic energy is stored and are described in terms of equivalent circuit representations based either on lumped element circuits or on transmission lines. Connection networks connect the subcircuits representing the subdomains. The connection networks are lossless, don't store energy and represent the overall problem topology. This is similar to what is done in circuit theory and permits a phrasing of the solution of EM field problems in complex structures by Network-oriented methods.

This monograph contains the ceremonials and the Proceedings pertaining to the WorkshopjMinisymposium on "Electromagnetics in a Complex World: Challenges and Perspectives," convened at the University of Sannio, Ben evento, Italy, from February 20-21, 2003, in connection with the bestowal of an honorary Laurea degree on Professor Leopold B. Felsen. The symposium was co-organized by Professors Innocenzo M. Pinto and Vincenzo Galdi, in consul tation with Professor Felsen. The University of Sannio is a recently installed fast-growing university enrolling about 6,500 undergraduate and graduatestu dents in its various programs (Law, Economics, Engineering, Sciences). The College of Engineering presently comprises 50 faculty members and about 1,500 students. The degree bestowal ceremony took place in the morning of February 20, 2003, and is documented (in English) in its entirety here in Part VI of these Proceedings (because of the international character of this two-day event, the program booklet provided for attendees of the degree award ceremony was printed in Italian and English). After a brief greeting by Prof. Aniello Cimitile, the President of the University of Sannio, Professor Pinto, who had originally proposed Prof. Felsen's nomination, delivered (in Italian) a detailed Laudatio, a laudatory discourse on the nominee's accomplishments and per sonality. This was followed by the nominee's Lectio, a retrospective covering his professional life as well as his social and cultural background, presented (in English) in a mixed style laced with humor, and comprising prose, verses, visuals, and photographs.
