The Spanish Inquisition is often seen as the archetype of religious fervour and fanaticism, and several of the papers here naturally focus on its activities. Overall, however, this volume aims to look at the broader context of religious attitudes in Spain, from the end of the 15th to the late 17th century. In an examination of how the religious orders behaved, the contributors demonstrate that concepts which may now appear excessive were perceived at that time. Similarly, poetry and other literary texts provide evidence for how Jews viewed Christians and Christians viewed Moors.

This is the only comparative study of its kind, investigating how women construct their roles within the public sphere and highlighting the ways in which traditional versus modern values impact on female identity in France and Spain. Which female figures are proposed for our admiration? Who proposes them and what values do they represent? This study embarks on an analysis of such cultural icons, going on to address contemporary roles and issues concerning women in the two countries. Finally, Twomey shows how these two strands of discussion inform and interact with each other. The 20th Century – the Century of Women – is celebrated for advancing the cause of women's rights and the contributing authors look to the future and to opportunities presented by the new century.

An examination of typology about place in relation to the Virgin Mary. This book takes a fresh look at some of the seemingly tired images of the Virgin Mary across the medieval and early Golden Age period in Hispanic literatures. It explores the Virgin as a gateway and as a Temple, as a garden and asa fountain, as a scented space, and as a strong defensive place (fortress or castle wall). It also explores her as a home and as a nuptial bedchamber, and sets these images in the context of known liturgical usage in medieval andearly modern Spain. LESLEY TWOMEY is Professor of Medieval and Golden Age Art and Literature at Northumbria University. She is the author of several books about peninsular Marian literature.

This book offers an integrated study of the English princess and Castilian queen Catherine of Lancaster (1373–1418), drawing on available archival, architectural, and poetic sources in England and Spain. Catherine’s mother, Queen of Castile in exile, and father, the powerful military commander John of Gaunt, raised her to take the Castilian throne. This volume connects Catherine’s early life, providing insights into those who promoted her cause from birth as Princess of Castile, and her later life as Princess of Asturias, then Queen-consort, and finally Dowager and Co-regent of Castile. Her influence on the Castilian court’s poetic circles has not previously been connected to her English heritage. Poetry written about her and influenced by her was compiled into a songbook presented to her son, Juan II. The book brings new understanding of the role an Englishwoman played in Trastámara Castile’s turbulent history.
