Originally published nearly forty years ago as a spiritual successor to Carl Mitcham and Robert Mackey''s Philosophy and Technology, the essays collected in the two volumes of Theology and Technology span an array of theological attitudes and perspectives providing sufficient material for careful reflection and engagement. The first volume offers five general attitudes toward technology based off of H. Richard Niebuhr''s five ideal types in Christ and Culture. The second volume includes biblical, historical, and modern theological engagements with the place of technology in the Christian life. This ecumenical collection ranges from authors who enthusiastically support technological development to those cynical of technique and engages the Christian tradition from the church fathers to recent theologians like Bernard Lonergan and Jacques Ellul. Taken together, these essays, some reproductions of earlier work and others original for this project, provide any student of theology a fitting entree into considering the place of technology in the realm of the sacred.

This book is a global reflection on disparate religious and philosophical approaches to questions of AI and the particular ways these questions affect East Asian societies. These chapters originate from a conference held at Hong Kong Baptist University in April 2023 on “Ethical and Social Issues in AI: East Asia and Beyond.” Sections cover Confucianist, Daoist, and Christian reflections on AI ethics. Chapters on broad theoretical questions that AI poses are included as well as those addressing issues in applied AI ethics. This volume appeals to students and researchers working across cultures and traditions on the philosophy of AI technology.

This volume represents a critical development in philosophy of technology as Chinese scholars articulate a constructive Chinese philosophy of technology in dialogue with the West, but not subordinate to it. Carl Mitcham's introductory essay and Alfred Nordmann's contribution propose Western philosophers take more seriously the independent value of Chinese philosophy of technology. Additional essays are authored by established European philosophers, mid-career American thinkers, and young Chinese scholars. Included are comparative studies of philosophy of technology outside the Western-Chinese axis, as well as on Western critiques of traditional philosophy of technology. While much of Mitcham’s work has shaped the philosophy of technology and engineering, his later contribution poses a fundamental question of which new generations of philosophers must engage: What went wrong with the West? This volume is a must-read for scholars, advanced students, policymakers, and the general public interested in contemporary technology in a multipolar world.
