Misinformation can be broadly defined as information that is inaccurate or false according to the best available evidence, or information whose validity cannot be verified. It is created and spread with or without clear intent to cause harm. There is well-documented evidence that misinformation persists despite fact-checking and the presentation of corrective information, often traveling faster and deeper than facts in the online environment. Drawing on the frameworks of social judgment theory, cognitive dissonance theory, and motivated information processing, the authors conceptualize corrective information as a generic type of counter-attitudinal message and misinformation as attitude-congruent messages. They then examine the persistence of misinformation through the lens of biased responses to attitude-inconsistent versus -consistent information. Psychological inoculation is proposed as a strategy to mitigate misinformation.

The Second Edition of The SAGE Handbook of Persuasion: Developments in Theory and Practice provides readers with logical, comprehensive summaries of research in a wide range of areas related to persuasion. From a topical standpoint, this handbook takes an interdisciplinary approach, covering issues that will be of interest to interpersonal and mass communication researchers as well as to psychologists and public health practitioners. Persuasion is presented in this volume on a micro to macro continuum, moving from chapters on cognitive processes, the individual, and theories of persuasion, to chapters highlighting broader social factors and phenomena related to persuasion, such as social context and larger scale persuasive campaigns. Each chapter identifies key challenges to the area and provides research strategies for addressing those challenges.

Volume 1 of Quantitative Research Methods in Communication Science covers the foundational and general issues, operationalization and measurement, as well as study design anddata collection. The section on foundational issues includes chapters on the philosophy of science, causal inference, replicability and open science, statistical power, and ethical issues in quantitative research. The section on operation and measurement includes chapters on concept explication, scale development, establishment of scale unidimensionality, and reliability and validity assessment. The section on study design and data collection includes chapters on experimental studies, survey research, sampling, content and text analysis, the virtual reality method, online data collection, and the collection of digital data. This volume is the first of two that cover state-of-the-art quantitative communication research methods.

Volume 2 of Quantitative Research Methods in Communication Science covers statistical methods, specialized methods, and computer-assisted data analysis. The book concludes with an epilogue discussing future directions of quantitative research methods in communication science. The section on statistical methods includes chapters on ANOVA/regression, latent cluster/profile analysis, mediation and moderation analysis, dyadic data analysis, multilevel modeling, structural equation modeling, longitudinal data analysis, models of within-individuals change over time, meta-analysis and research synthesis, and Bayesian methods. The section on specialized methods includes chapters on virtual reality, eye-tracking, neuroimaging methods, and physiological methods. The section on computer-assisted data analysis includes chapters on textual data analysis, agent-based modeling, semantic network analysis, machine learning, visual/image processing, and video processing. This volume is the second of two that coverstate-of-the-art quantitative communication research methods.
