While its origins date back to the 19th Century, the field of clinical neuropsychology has existed as a distinct discipline for less than 60 years. The Oxford Handbook of the History of Neuropsychology tells this story of how neuropsychology has evolved to its present state and where is it going. This comprehensive volume begins with chapters reviewing the history of neuropsychology''s approaches to disorders of attention, language, memory, and other conditions. Other chapters focus on the origins of neuropsychology''s methods including neuropsychological testing, brain imaging, and studies of laterality including the Wada test. While this volume has a number of chapters covering regional developments in clinical neuropsychology as a profession in the United States, it is one of the first volumes to provide additional chapters on development of neuropsychology across different countries. This Handbook gathers the work of experts in the field to provide extensive coverage of the origins of neuropsychology''s methods and its approach to various clinical conditions across the globe.

To discuss the relationship between stress and health status, it is first necessary to define the term "stress." This is not a mundane issue, because the term "stress" is popularly used to refer to a wide range of physiological changes, psychological states, and environmental pressures in the health/illness literature. Stress was first described as a biological syndrome by Selye (1936, p. 32): Experiments on rats show that if the organism is severely damaged by acute non-specific nocuous agents such as exposure to cold, surgical injury, production of spinal shock ... a typical syndrome appears, the symptoms of which are independent of the nature of the damaging agent ... and represent rather a response to damage as such.

The notion of individual differences in health and illness stems from the unique organization of behavior that profoundly affects how each individual maintains health, expresses and experiences symptoms of illness, and reacts to efforts at treatment.

What is the relationship between stress and illness? How does stress affect immune responsivity? Why do some people cope better than others? Questions like these have generated considerable research during the last forty-five years. In this book, Dr. Linas A. Bieliauskas reviews the most significant stress-illness research and traces the evolution of stress theory, emphasizing such areas as hormonal responses to stress and the cognitive and social factors that affect people's abilities to cope successfully with stressful situations, including illness. In addition to examining how each individual's history relates to his or her reactions to life events, Dr. Bieliauskas takes a closer look at some specific psychophysiological reactions to stress-headaches, back pain, asthma, ulcers, and heart disease. He also discusses stress-related diseases such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, Grave's disease, psychological disturbances, and immune-related illnesses. The book concludes with a discussion of how the findings of stress-illness research can be applied in the clinical setting. An extensive bibliography has been included to encourage further exploration of the topics discussed.
