This book constitutes the joint refereed proceedings of the three workshops held in conjunction with the 7th International Conference on Web Information Systems, WISE 2006, in Wuhan, China, in October 2006.

A total of 90 papers were submitted to the three workshops, and 31 revised full papers were carefully selected for presentation. The Workshop on Web Information Access and Digital Library (WIADL 2006) - which aims at improving and facilitating Web information access by using digital libraries - included 14 out of 41 submissions. The Workshop of Web-Based Massive Data Processing (WMDP 2006) accounted for 13 papers, from 39 papers submitted. It discusses how to effectively and efficiently collect, extract, store, index, query and analyze massive data that has been accumulated in many web-based applications such as deep Web applications and Web search engines. The Workshop on Advances in Web-based Learning included 4 presentations selected from 10 submissions. New ideas on Web-based learning are presented - using the Web to access vast amount of information and resources - that allow implementing a range of new teaching and learning practices.

Retrieval of multimedia data is different from retrieval of structured data. A key problem in multimedia databases is search, and the proposed solutions to the problem of multimedia information retrieval span a rather wide spectrum of topics outside the traditional database area, ranging from information retrieval and human–computer interaction to computer vision and pattern recognition.

Based on more than 10 years of teaching experience, Blanken and his coeditors have assembled all the topics that should be covered in advanced undergraduate or graduate courses on multimedia retrieval and multimedia databases. The single chapters of this textbook explain the general architecture of multimedia information retrieval systems; various metadata languages like Dublin Core, RDF, or MPEG; pattern recognition through Markov models, unsupervised learning, and pattern clustering; various indexing approaches to audio and video streams; interaction and control; the protection of content and user privacy; and search effectiveness and efficiency. The authors emphasize high-level features and show how these features are used in mathematical models to support the retrieval process. For each chapter, there’s detail on further reading, and additional exercises and teaching material is available online.

This two volume set LNCS 7825 and LNCS 7826 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Database Systems for Advanced Applications, DASFAA 2013, held in Wuhan, China, in April 2013. The 51 revised full papers and 10 short papers presented together with 2 invited keynote talks, 1 invited paper, 3 industrial papers, 9 demo presentations, 4 tutorials and 1 panel paper were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 227 submissions. The topics covered in part 1 are social networks; query processing; nearest neighbor search; index; query analysis; XML data management; privacy protection; and uncertain data management; and in part 2: graph data management; physical design; knowledge management; temporal data management; social networks; query processing; data mining; applications; and database applications.
