WAIM 2004, Dalian (China), 15-17 July, was hosted by Northeastern Univ- sity, China and Dalian University of Technology, China in cooperation with the Database Society of CCF. It was the International Conference on Web-Age Information Management. WAIM 2004 brought together participants from u- versities,industry, and governmentto present,discuss, and address both current issues and novel approaches in the practice, deployment, theory, and meth- ology of information management in the context of the World Wide Web. The conference provided an international forum for the sharing of original research results and practical development experiences among researchers and appli- tion developers from the many Web-related areas. The previous WAIM conf- ences wereheld in Shanghai(WAIM 2000),Xi'an (WAIM 2001),Beijing (WAIM 2002), and Chengdu, China (WAIM 2003). These conferences turned out to be very successful and each attracted more than 100 participants from all over the world.The WAIM 2004 conference included technical sessions organized around important subtopics such as data streamprocessing,time series data processing, mobilecomputing,cachemanagement,security,XML,Web services,Web search engines, query evaluation, and data mining, etc. Following careful review of the 291 submissionsby membersof the internationalprogramcommittee, 57 regular papers and 23 short/industrial papers were accepted for presentation at the conference and for publication in this volume. The submissions came from a total of 22 countries and regions, and the accepted ones were from 13 countries andregions,including Australia,Canada,Chile,China,HongKongSAR,Korea, Norway, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, UAE, UK, and USA. The conference also consisted of a poster and demonstration track, the publication of which was done in CD-ROM form.

This book constitutes the joint refereed proceedings of the three workshops held in conjunction with the 7th International Conference on Web Information Systems, WISE 2006, in Wuhan, China, in October 2006.A total of 90 papers were submitted to the three workshops, and 31 revised full papers were carefully selected for presentation. The Workshop on Web Information Access and Digital Library (WIADL 2006) - which aims at improving and facilitating Web information access by using digital libraries - included 14 out of 41 submissions. The Workshop of Web-Based Massive Data Processing (WMDP 2006) accounted for 13 papers, from 39 papers submitted. It discusses how to effectively and efficiently collect, extract, store, index, query and analyze massive data that has been accumulated in many web-based applications such as deep Web applications and Web search engines. The Workshop on Advances in Web-based Learning included 4 presentations selected from 10 submissions. New ideas on Web-based learning are presented - using the Web to access vast amount of information and resources - that allow implementing a range of new teaching and learning practices.

Retrieval of multimedia data is different from retrieval of structured data. A key problem in multimedia databases is search, and the proposed solutions to the problem of multimedia information retrieval span a rather wide spectrum of topics outside the traditional database area, ranging from information retrieval and human–computer interaction to computer vision and pattern recognition.Based on more than 10 years of teaching experience, Blanken and his coeditors have assembled all the topics that should be covered in advanced undergraduate or graduate courses on multimedia retrieval and multimedia databases. The single chapters of this textbook explain the general architecture of multimedia information retrieval systems; various metadata languages like Dublin Core, RDF, or MPEG; pattern recognition through Markov models, unsupervised learning, and pattern clustering; various indexing approaches to audio and video streams; interaction and control; the protection of content and user privacy; and search effectiveness and efficiency. The authors emphasize high-level features and show how these features are used in mathematical models to support the retrieval process. For each chapter, there’s detail on further reading, and additional exercises and teaching material is available online.

The 42 full papers presented together with 26 short papers and the abstracts of 2 keynote speeches were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book.
