This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th European Conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases, PKDD 2003, held in Cavtat-Dubrovnik, Croatia in September 2003 in conjunction with ECML 2003.The 40 revised full papers presented together with 4 invited contributions were carefully reviewed and, together with another 40 ones for ECML 2003, selected from a total of 332 submissions. The papers address all current issues in data mining and knowledge discovery in databases including data mining tools, association rule mining, classification, clustering, pattern mining, multi-relational classifiers, boosting, kernel methods, learning Bayesian networks, inductive logic programming, user preferences mining, time series analysis, multi-view learning, support vector machine, pattern mining, relational learning, categorization, information extraction, decision making, prediction, and decision trees.

The papers address all current issues in machine learning including support vector machine, inductive inference, feature selection algorithms, reinforcement learning, preference learning, probabilistic grammatical inference, decision tree learning, clustering, classification, agent learning, Markov networks, boosting, statistical parsing, Bayesian learning, supervised learning, and multi-instance learning.

The 9th International Conference on Discovery Science (DS 2006) was held in Barcelona, Spain, on 7–10 October 2006. The conference was collocated with the 17th International Conference on Algorithmic Learning Theory (ALT 2006). The two conferences shared the invited talks. This LNAI volume, containing the proceedings of the 9th International C- ference onDiscoveryScience, is structured in three parts. The ?rstpart contains the papers/abstracts of the invited talks, the second part contains the accepted long papers, and the third part the accepted regular (short) papers. Out of 87 submitted papers, 23 were accepted for publication as long papers, and 18 as regular papers. All the submitted papers were reviewed by two or three ref- ees. In addition to the presentations of accepted papers, the DS 2006 conference program consisted of three invited talks, two tutorials, the collocated ALT 2006 conference and the Pascal Dialogues workshop.
