“Evolve or perish” – this is the motto for living systems. Judging by this saying, the Web is alive and well: new sites and business ideas are coming online almost daily and are able to attract millions of users often. The more recently coined term “Web 2.0” summarizes many of the new developments, capturing efforts making the Web more interactive (like Ajax), more collaborative (like Wikis), or more relationship oriented (like online social networks), aiming to partially fulfill the original promise of the Web. These new Web developments offer an opportunity and challenge for the Semantic Web: what previously manifested itself mostly in “dry” specifications is now becoming the foundation for information exchange on the Web, creating a shared semantic information space. These and other challenges have been picked up by several hundred computer scientists, developers, vendors, government workers, venture capitalists, students, and users, gathered in Athens, Atlanta, USA, November 5–9, 2006, for the Fifth International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2006). Building on previous successful meetings in Sardinia, Sanibel Island, Hiroshima, and Galway, this sixth annual conference demonstrates new research results, technology, and applications that show current incarnations of the Semantic Web. Especially encouraging is the shift towards more applications—whereas the Research Track attracted roughly as many papers as in the previous year, the contributions submitted to the In-Use Track doubled.

This volume contains papers from the technical program of the 6th European Semantic Web Conference (ESWC 2009), held from May 31 to June 4, 2009, in Heraklion, Greece. ESWC 2009 presented the latest results in research and applications of Semantic Web technologies. In addition to the technical research track, ESWC 2009 featured a tutorial program, a PhD symposium, a system demo track, a poster track, a number of collocated workshops, and for the ?rst time in the series a Semantic Web in-use track exploring the bene?ts of applying Semantic Web technology in real-life applications and contexts. Thetechnical researchpaper trackreceivedover250submissions.The review process was organized using a two-tiered system, where each submission was reviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee. Vice Program CommitteeChairsorganizedadiscussionbetweenreviewers,collectedadditional reviews when necessary and provided a metareview for each submission. During a physical Program Committee meeting, the Vice Program Committee Chairs together with the Program Chairs selected 45 research papers to be presented at the conference.

ESWC 2010 presented the latest results in research and applications of Semantic Web technologies. ESWC 2010 built on the success of the former European Semantic Web Conference series, but sought to extend its focus by engaging with other communities within and outside Information and Communication Technologies, in which semantics can play an important role. At the same time, ESWC has become a truly international conference. Semantics of Web content, enriched with domain theories (ontologies), data about Web usage, natural language processing, etc., will enable a Web that p- vides a qualitatively new level of functionality. It will weave together a large network of human knowledge and make this knowledge machine-processable. Various automated services, based on reasoning with metadata and ontologies, will help the users to achieve their goals by accessing and processing infor- tion in machine-understandable form. This network of knowledge systems will ultimately lead to truly intelligent systems, which will be employed for va- ous complex decision-making tasks. Research about Web semantics can bene?t from ideas and cross-fertilization with many other areas: arti?cial intelligence, natural language processing, database and information systems, information - trieval, multimedia, distributed systems, social networks, Web engineering, and Web science.

The two-volume set LNCS 8218 and 8219 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 12th International Semantic Web Conference, ISWC 2013, held in Sydney, Australia, in October 2013. The International Semantic Web Conference is the premier forum for Semantic Web research, where cutting edge scientific results and technological innovations are presented, where problems and solutions are discussed, and where the future of this vision is being developed. It brings together specialists in fields such as artificial intelligence, databases, social networks, distributed computing, Web engineering, information systems, human-computer interaction, natural language processing, and the social sciences. Part 1 (LNCS 8218) contains a total of 45 papers which were presented in the research track. They were carefully reviewed and selected from 210 submissions. Part 2 (LNCS 8219) contains 16 papers from the in-use track which were accepted from 90 submissions. In addition, it presents 10 contributions to the evaluations and experiments track and 5 papers of the doctoral consortium.
