This successful book, now Open Access in its second edition, was the first to discuss skin necrosis as a symptom related to a broad range of pathologies. In recent years, wound care has gained increasing recognition as a distinct medical specialty. An understanding of the complex mechanisms involved in wound healing facilitates efficient assessment and treatment of patients with wounds, and skin necrosis can be considered the starting point in the entire healing process.Richly illustrated, this volume primarily provides therapeutic strategies and treatment algorithms for different clinical contexts, covering topics in distinct part: starting from definitions, physiopathology, vascular and imaging investigations, it then examines skin necrosis in its diverse clinical context, each assigned to a specific part: whether originated from physical injuries, of toxic origin, of medical or infectious nature, the content then shifts from the clinical context to the more specifically surgical context, and the application of existing techniques from dressing to debriding, including sharp and conservative ones. Dedicated sections deal with the pediatric and the elderly patients, closing the volume with a part on debridement education, from the perspective of the nurse and the physician, and finally a chapter on distance skin necrosis management, in the light of e-Health and personalized medicine. All chapters were written by renowned specialists in their respected fields and include detailed sample cases and essential take-home messages; the topics that require an in-depth approach are extensively covered, whereas clinical chapters are more essential, focusing on practicality. In light of the highly interdisciplinary nature of wound management, this new, updated edition of Skin Necrosis will be a much-valued tool for wound care practitioners and health care professionals across the fields of surgery, dermatology, internal medicine, and nursing.

Scars are the final result of the four processes that constitute cutaneous wound healing. Permanent scars are produced if the wounds reach the reticular dermis. If the inflammation phase is prolonged and/or more potent for some reason, inflammatory/pathological scars such as keloids or hypertrophic scars can arise. If these pathological scars are located on joints or mobile regions, scar contractures can develop. When used with the appropriate timing and when selected on the basis of individual factors, surgical techniques can improve mature scars. This new edition focuses on the surgical techniques that are used to improve mature scars, burn scars, and scar contractures. In this up-to-date atlas, leading specialists in post-burn treatment and the reconstruction of post-burn scar contractures depict in detail not only surgical techniques but also a variety of advantageous wound treatments. Many new methods invented by the authors are presented. Operative techniques are depicted in detail, and clear guidance is provided on selection of the most appropriate flap surgery. Advice is also given on how to prevent permanently disabling restriction of joint movement as a result of contractures and how to achieve good aesthetic reconstruction. This fully revised second edition of the celebrated Color Atlas of Burn Reconstructive Surgery also features additional material and a subject index, on top of a wealth of clinical cases and bespoke illustrations. This unique work will appeal to a wide audience, from beginners in plastic surgery to specialist surgeons, and prove invaluable for doctors of every kind who deal with wound management.

Wounds have existed since the beginning of time, and records of their nature and treatment are found in the earliest documents. Interestingly, many of these treat ments are now being rediscovered or re-used in modern-day clinical practice. In addition to the diverse nature of treatments that have been suggested as being beneficial for wounds, over many centuries there has been a range of clinicians who have cared for patients with wounds, and in many parts of the world today it is not doctors but other professional colleagues - e. g. nurses or podiatrists - who are the most knowledgeable persons on wounds and wound treatments. Finally, the nature of wounds seen in clinical practice is changing. Increasing destructive power is resulting in more severe injuries occurring in patients involved in conflict. Developments in surgical techniques have enabled new surgical procedures to be offered to patients, but novel and more severe complications can result from such technical advances. In addition, many societies around the world are having to deal with an increasing ageing population, and huge increases in the number of patients suffering from chronic wounds are being seen. In summary, expanding treatment options, diverse groups of clinicians caring for patients and changes in the nature of wounds seen in clinical practice are real issues that have to be faced, and solutions have to be found if patients are to receive optional care for their wounds.
