Despite the large quantity of phenomenological information concerning the bulk properties of nematic phase liquid crystals, little is understood about the origin of the surface energy, particularly the surface, interfacial, and anchoring properties of liquid crystals that affect the performance of liquid crystal devices. Self-contained and unique, Adsorption Phenomena and Anchoring Energy in Nematic Liquid Crystals provides an account of new and established results spanning three decades of research into the problems of anchoring energy and adsorption phenomena in liquid crystals. The book contains a detailed discussion of the origin and possible sources of anchoring energy in nematic liquid crystals, emphasizing the dielectric contribution to the anchoring energy in particular. Beginning with fundamental surface and anchoring properties of liquid crystals and the definition of the nematic phase, the authors explain how selective ion adsorption, dielectric energy density, thickness dependence, and bias voltage dependence influence the uniform alignment of liquid crystals and affect the performance of liquid crystal devices. They also discuss fundamental equations regulating the adsorption phenomenon and the dynamic aspects of ion adsorption phenomenon in liquid crystalline systems.Adsorption Phenomena and Anchoring Energy in Nematic Liquid Crystals serves as an excellent source of reference for graduates and researchers working in liquid crystals, complex fluids, condensed matter physics, statistical physics, chemical engineering, and electronic engineering, as well as providing a useful general introduction to and background information on the nematic liquid crystal phase.

Anomalous diffusion has been detected in a wide variety of scenarios, from fractal media, systems with memory, transport processes in porous media, to fluctuations of financial markets, tumour growth, and complex fluids. Providing a contemporary treatment of this process, this book examines the recent literature on anomalous diffusion and covers a rich class of problems in which surface effects are important, offering detailed mathematical tools of usual and fractional calculus for a wide audience of scientists and graduate students in physics, mathematics, chemistry and engineering. Including the basic mathematical tools needed to understand the rules for operating with the fractional derivatives and fractional differential equations, this self-contained text presents the possibility of using fractional diffusion equations with anomalous diffusion phenomena to propose powerful mathematical models for a large variety of fundamental and practical problems in a fast-growing field of research.

This textbook takes readers on a comprehensive journey through the history of physics, highlighting key discoveries that not only deepened our understanding of the natural world but also enabled humanity to master it. Beginning with the ancient civilizations of the Fertile Crescent, Egypt, and India, the exploration then moves to the Greek intellectual revolution, where early thinkers like the Pre-Socratics and scholars of Alexandria laid the foundations of scientific thought. It examines Aristotle’s early theory of motion and the first attempts to understand the cosmos. The medieval period is explored through two major themes: the persistence of motion and the Principle of Inertia, from Aristotle to Galileo, and the motion of the heavens, culminating in Copernicus’ radical shift. Bridging the medieval and modern eras, the book focuses on the period between Copernicus and Newton, delving into the works of Kepler, Galileo, Descartes, Huygens, and Newton. The journey culminates with the Newtonian Synthesis, encapsulating centuries of inquiry into a unified framework. This textbook is designed for a one-semester history of physics course and serves as a foundational resource for introductory courses in the history and philosophy of science. It’s also suitable as supplementary material for students in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and related fields, as well as for philosophy and humanities courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The content is structured for a standard four-hour weekly course but can also be adapted for graduate programs in humanities-related fields.

This book was written to enable physicists and engineers to learn, within a single course, some topics in variational calculus, theory of elasticity, molecular models, and surface properties of nematic materials. It prepares graduate students for studies that require a simple knowledge in the physics of nematic liquid crystals. With this consideration in mind, the authors have formulated the problems concerning the continuum theory of liquid crystals into a precise form. In working out the solutions, they have analyzed, systematically and naturally, the techniques and methods of variational calculus. Special attention is dedicated to the analysis of well-posed and ill-posed variational problems. The presence of sub-surface discontinuity in the nematic orientation is analyzed using different techniques. A full chapter is devoted to this aspect of the theory of elasticity of nematic media.
