David Lyons's well-known essays on Mill's moral theory are collected in this volume, with an introduction which relates the essays to prior and subsequent philosophical developments. The first essay defends the beneficiary theory of rights. The central set of essays develop new interpretations of Mill's moral theory with the aim of determining how far rights can be incorporated in a utilitarian framework. They also provide a new reading of Mill's theory of liberty. The last essay argues that the promise of Mill's theory of justice cannot be fulfilled, as utilitarianism is unable to account for crucial features of moral rights, or even for the moral force of legal rights whose existence might be justified on utilitarian grounds.

This book is a collection of invited papers (previously published in special issues of the Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology) written by internationally recognized researchers actively working in the field of plasma surface modification. It provides a current, comprehensive overview of the plasma treatment of polymers. In contrast to plasma polymerization, plasma surface modification reactions do not cause thin-film deposition, and can therefore only modify the surface properties of organic substrates. Plasma surface modifications are fast, efficient methods for improving the adhesion properties and other surface characteristics of a variety of polymeric materials. The focus of this volume is on adhesion phenomena, surface properties and the surface characterization of plasma-treated materials. This book opens with a critical review of the plasma surface modification of polymers for improved adhesion. The remainder of the papers are divided into two sections, one dealing with the characterization of plasma-treated surfaces and the second concerned with various practical applications of plasma-treated surfaces

This is a richly illustrated volume that demonstrates Sicily's essential role in the development of the ancient Mediterranean world. Ancient Sicily, a prosperous island at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, occupied a pivotal place in the region. In the late 8th Century B.C., emigres from the Greek mainland founded colonies along the shores of the region now known as Sicily. Over time, the area grew wealthy from its agricultural abundance, and colonial settlements emerged as formidable metropolises. Sicily is the only English-language book that focuses on the watershed period between 480 B.C. and the Roman conquest of Syracuse in 212 B.C. - a time of great social and political ferment. Essays investigate Sicily not simply as a destination for adventurers and settlers, but as a catalyst that shaped Greek culture at its peak and transmitted Hellenism to Rome. In the opulent courts of the Sicilian city-states, artists, poets, and scientist attained levels of ingenuity rivaling those of "old Greece." Innovation in architecture, engineering, philosophy and literature flourished in mixed cultural communities.

The number of part-time faculty members is increasing steadily, to the point that most colleges and universities could not function efficiently without them. The evening and weekend availability of adjunct faculty enables us to expand class schedules to serve the educational needs of nontraditional students, and their expertise offers students important real-world perspectives.Yet there is often a lack of preparation or support for their vital role. Best Practices for Supporting Adjunct Faculty is written for a full range of academic leaders, including instructional administrators, department chairs, and directors of teaching and learning centers. It showcases proven initiatives at a variety of institutional types—two- and four year, public and private—that help achieve the needs of adjunct instructors, while increasing their effectiveness within institutions’ existing delivery systems. This book provides research data on the initiatives highlighted, and valuable ideas for institutions expanding their professional development opportunities for part-time instructors—thus enhancing student learning and improving accountability outcomes. Contents include: Deepening our understanding of adjunct facultyEnsuring an effective start for adjunct facultySupporting adjunct faculty through face-to-face and online programmingMentoring adjunct instructors in a variety of approachesBuilding community and a sense of missionAnalysis of orientation, pre-service training, recognition, and comprehensive professional development programs for adjunct facultyPortraits of proven programs and strategies for implementing initiatives at your institutionAn adjunct professor’s perspective on the benefits of supporting your part-timers’ teaching
