The Sears is a long list as well as mechine to coin subject headings. Learning to deftly operate the machine makes the SH work stimulating and intellectually challenging. Therefore, the book aims at the working cataloguers to explore the hidden vast capacity to turn out subject headings; and to explain the subtleties and nuances of the system. It might encourage the cataloguers from non-western cultures to explore and adapt Sears to coin headings suited to their culture and literature. At the same time the Sears systems has many inconsistencies and omissions. Many clarifications are explicitly needed. For example, are the topical subdivisions applicable to the narrower terms or the headings derived according to SA instructions? There is no explicit statement to make a language family name a subject heading. Above all, just like any other subject analysis tool the Sears is inherently biased towards Western (dominantly American), Christian and capitalistic culture. For example, heading for Unmarried mothers/fathers, Single Parent family, or Children of divorced parents are there, for which no literature is available in India. But child marriage, which is a current concern in India finds no mention in the list. This workbook with so many explanations and illustrations aims to help the cataloguers and students to have a joyous times working with the Sears to analyse and represent knowledge and appreciate its flexibility to coin standard subject headings for Indian libraries.

This book aims to introduce students to the process of assigning and especially synthesising class numbers by the 19th edition of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC-19). It is still the highly used edition in Indian library schools.The chapters and the examples have been graded to some extent. No background, whatsoever, has been assumed on the part of the students. It provides a complete course to train them in the techniques of number building involving the use of auxiliary tables and multiple synthesis.The graded process of number building will show the students the increasingly faceted nature of the system and its advancing steps towards what S.R. Ranganathan terms as depth classification. To avoid verbosity, the number building has been depicted through equations and facet formulae. The examples chosen are, as a matter of necessity, largely imaginary, though not far from the realities of the literary warrant. The aim is to be amply illustrative and to step by step introduce the new concepts and methods. ‘ Though the book is based on the 19th edition of the DDC, students using the DDC-18 and 20 should find no difficulty in using it as there is not much difference between these editions. Last chapter briefs the students on the current trends in the DDC studies and research.

Colon Classification (first published in 1933), devised by Dr. S.R. Ranganathan (1892-1972), is de facto the national classification system of India. It brought a revolution in library classification and gave birth to a new species of classification known as the analytico-synthetic system. It is the most prevalent mode of classification in the world today. The Manual of Practical Colon Classification aims to be a guide to the sixth edition (1963) of the Colon Classification (CC). It expounds with ample illustrations every rule, major and minor, of the CC. Illustrated interpretations of the rules are among its chief features. As a self-sufficient guide, it aims to be helpful to the advanced student as well as to the beginner in understanding and correctly interpreting the rules, especially the obscure and odd ones. Since its publication in 1984 the Manual has been used as a class text in many Indian library schools. In this revised edition some minor misprints have been corrected and some new examples added. A chapter on the structure of the text of Colon Classification is another addition.
