Pharmacology of Reproduction is the second volume of the proceedings of the Third International Pharmacological Meeting held in Sao Paulo in 1966. The volume presents papers about the pharmacological implications of the hypothalamic control of gonadotrophin and prolactin secretion and the factors affecting hypothalamic function, with focus on the pharmacology of puberty. The luteinizing hormone (LH)-like activity in the pituitary-hypothalamic complex of children and the chemistry and physiology of follicle-stimulating hormone-releasing factor and LH-release factor are studied as well in other papers presented. The volume then tackles papers about the factors affecting the testicular function in human; immunological factors affecting spermatogenesis; and the factors stimulating the ovarian function in human. The pharmacological inhibition of the ovarian function is also considered in the volume. Practicing endocrinologists and physiologists and students taking endocrinology courses will find the book invaluable.

Immunopharmacology is the 11th volume of the proceedings of the Third International Pharmacological Meeting held at Sao Paulo, Brazil on July 26, 1966. The volume covers papers that deal with immunoglobulins responsible for hypersensitivity reactions and with the mechanisms of these reactions; pharmacological mediators of immediate and delayed hypersensitivity; Arthus reactions; and soluble factors released by the action of antigen on sensitized lymphocytes. The book concludes with a single paper on the subject of penicillin allergy. Immunologists and pharmacologists will find the volume invaluable.

Salt and Water Balance, Volume 8 presents the proceedings of the 3rd International Pharmacological Meeting, held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on July 24–30, 1966. This book features the modulation of renal control of electrolyte and water balance, which is the most effective approach of handling most clinical problems wherein fluid retention needs to be reduced. Comprised of 10 chapters, this compilation of papers starts with an overview of the diuretic agents that are effective diuretic therapy. This text then describes the active transport, which proceeds at the expense of energy against the combined chemical and electrical gradients in the case of electrolytes. Other chapters consider the historical importance in therapy and the mechanisms of action of mercurial diuretics. This book discusses as well the complications and unwanted side effects of diuretic therapy. The final chapter deals with the hemodynamic mechanisms and their possible influence on the tubular function. This book is a valuable resource for physicians, health care professionals, and patients.

International Series of Monographs in Pure and Applied Biology, Modern Trends in Physiological Sciences, Volume 37: Chemical Mediators of the Acute Inflammatory Reaction traces the history of investigation into the acute inflammatory reaction from the early observations in invertebrates to the experiments of therapeutic significance for humans. This book focuses on mediators that are accepted as being commonly involved in the inflammatory reaction, such as histamine, kinins, serotonin, prostaglandins, and permeability factors. The topics discussed include the phagocytic system and antibody production; factors which influence phagocytosis; measurement of the acute inflammatory reaction; and combined actions of mediators. The reaction to injury and manifestation of inflammation and biochemical aspects of anti-inflammatory drug reaction are also covered. This volume is beneficial to anatomists, biochemists, physiologists, immunologists, pathologists, pharmacologists, and clinicians interested in acute inflammatory reaction.

The Control of Growth Processes by Chemical Agents covers the proceedings of the 1966 Third International Pharmacological Meeting on Control of Growth Processes by Chemical Agents, held in Sao Paolo, Brazil. This book is composed of seven chapters, and begins with a survey of the comparative biology of dihydrofolate reductases as a basis for chemotherapy. The succeeding chapters deal with the mechanism of pyrimidine metabolism as a chemotherapeutic target and the biochemical and biological research works with arabinoforanosyl cytosine, known as cytarabine. These chapters specifically describe the cytotoxicity and antitumor activity of cytarabine. The remaining chapters discuss the advances in viral chemotherapy and the regulatory mechanisms of enzyme synthesis and their alteration in malignancy. This book will be of value to biologists, biochemists, and oncologists.

In the preface to Part I of this volume, which appeared in 1966, we stated: " ... we had to leave the Antihistaminics for another volume of unpredictable dimensions. In 1924, eight pages inserted in a Chapter on Mutterkorn by Arthur R.Cushing were considered enough, in Vol. II, Part II, pp. 1319-1326 of the Hand buch. Now 922 pages did not suffice to cover all aspects of the subject ... the subject has been expanded in so many directions, that the anti histaminic part had to be excluded from the present volume. Possibly, another thousand pages will be necessary to cover what remains of the subject."* This prediction was fulfilled, and the subject of histamine has grown to such an extent that dealing with the antihistaminics only in Part II would be quite inadequate. It is imperative to include the large number of recent findings on the subject of histamine, namely the splitting of its pharmacologic receptors, and the great variety of new contributions on ,its participation in physiopathologic phenomena, metabolism and interaction with newly found mediators.
