"The Gamma Ray Sky with Compton GRO and SIGMA" covers the results of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) satellite, which covers six decades of energy from 15 keV to 30 GeV, the French gamma ray telescope SIGMA, the first imaging experiment on a satellite to observe gamma rays from 35 keV to 1.3 MeV, and of ground-based telescopes in the TeV range. SIGMA and the suite of four instruments aboard the Compton GRO are first described by the members of the Compton GRO Team and the SIGMA science team. Most of the rest of the book is then devoted to the astronomical implications of these observations. The topics covered are: galactic and extragalactic gamma ray sources; galactic and extragalactic gamma ray backgrounds; the galactic centre; gamma ray spectrometry; and gamma ray bursts. Both experimentalists and theoreticians - both astrophysicists and particle physicists - review the achievements, problems and prospects in the gamma ray field, from 15 keV to 1 TeV. The book is also suitable for young scientists working on related topics.

Evry SCHATZMAN Radio-Astronomie, E. N. S. , Paris, France The recent developments of the Supernova theory and numerical relativity can lead in the near future to an understanding of gravitational collapse and to a reliable prediction of the amplitude of the gravitational waves generated during neutron star formation. These prospects explain the great interest which has developed in the international scientific community for the workshop. We were financially limited in the number of guests and participants and we apologize for not having been able to gather all the specialists actually involved in research programs relevant to gravitational collapse and numerical relativity. This limitation took place despite all the financial assistance which we have received from various institutions, first the C. N. R. S. (Centre National de 1a Recherche Scientifique) which has supported the request of Dr. Monique SIGNORE of organizing a workshop. Furhter help was obtained from I. N. A. G. (Institut National d'Astronomie et de Geophysique), Toulouse University (Universite "Paul Sabatier" or "Toulouse III"), the Toulouse section of C. N. E. S.(Centre National d'Etudes Spatia1es), the Department of theoretical physics of the C. E. A. , the Department of Astrophysique of the C. E. A. (Centre d'Etudes Nucleaires, Saclay), D. R. E. T. (Direction des Recherches Etudes et Techniques) and last but not least an important grant from NATO, whose scientific Committee recognized the international significance of the workshop. The meeting was organized by Professor D.

This volume consists of invited lectures and seminars presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute "The Gamma Ray Sky with COMPTON GRO and SIGMA" , which was held at the Centre de Physique Theorique of Les Houches (France) in January / February 1994. The school has been planned by a Scientific Organizing Committee. It was organized with the aim of providing students and young researchers with an up-to-date account of the high-energy phenomena in the vicinity of compact objets and the diffuse gamma-ray backgrounds after the early results from the gamma-ray telescope SIGMA and the four instruments onboard COMPTON GRO (Gamma Ray Observatory) : BATSE (Burst and Transient Source Experiment),COMPTEL(Compto'l Telescope),EGRET (Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope) and OS SE(Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment) . It was attended by more than sixty researchers from many countries. The lectures and seminars represent a complete coverage of our present knowledge and understanding of: Gamma-ray backgrounds, Gamma-ray Burts,Active Galactic Nuclei,Galactic Compact Objects, Gamma-ray Spectroscopy, Instrumentation and observation techniques, etc ... Most of these lectures are reproduced in this volume. Unfortunately, a few lecturers have chosen not to submit their manuscript.

This volume consists of invited lectures and seminars presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute "The Infrared and Submillimetre Sky after COBE", which was held at the Centre de Physique Theorique of Les Houches (France) in March 1991. The school has been planned by a Scientific Organizing Committee. It was organized with the aim of providing students and young researchers with an up-to-date account of the Cosmic Microwave Background, the Cosmic Infrared Background (if any), and the infrared emission of the Galaxy, after the early results from COBE (Cosmic Background Explo- rer). It was attended by about sixty researchers from many countries. The lectures and seminars represent a complete coverage of our present knowledge and understanding of: the Early Universe, Large-Scale Structure, Dust in Galaxies, Infrared to Submillimetre Backgrounds, CMB Anisotropies, complementary observations and instrumentation problems, etc. Most of these lectures are reproduced in this volume. Unfortunately, a few lecturers have chosen not to submit their manuscript.I would like to express my gratitude to the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and to the Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics Sections of the CNRS (Centre National de la Re- cherche Scientifique) for their generous support. Further help was obtain- ed from the DRET (Direction des Recherches, Etudes et Techniques), the CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales) and the IN2P3 (Institut Natio- nal de Physique Nuc1eaire et de Physique des Particules), which I hereby gratefully acknowledge.

This book is devoted to one of the most relevant problems of modern cosmology: the formation of structures in the framework of big bang cosmology. The standard theory of gravitational instability has met with great success but has also encountered significant difficulties. In this book the alternative possibility offered by topological defects is explored in detail. A pedagogical introduction to the problem is given and several theoretical aspects of the problem are reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on the observable consequences of the presence of topological defects, and in particular their interaction with cosmic background radiation; other observable effects are also discussed. In addition, laboratory experiments on topological defects are dealt with. This book will, for a long time, serve as one of the best references, on the topic for students and researchers in cosmology.
