German-English-French edition The work of Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) represents a unique contribution to modernist sculpture. Known for his elongated, expressive figures from the period after 1945, he was also a notable member of the Surrealist group around André Breton between 1930 and 1935. To mark the anniversary “100 Years of Surrealism”, the exhibition and catalogue shed light on Giacometti’s surrealist oeuvre, exploring how the surrealist element continues in his post-war works. His friendship and artistic ties with Max Ernst are also examined for the first time. The richly-illustrated, trilingual catalogue presents Giacometti's surrealist-influenced sculptures together with paintings, drawings and prints. In the newly created painting series Headless, Marianna Simnett makes direct reference to Max Ernst’s collage novel La Femme 100 têtes (The Hundred Headless Woman, 1929). In her dreamlike, at times nightmarish installation, she interweaves questions about gender social hierarchy, metamorphosis, vulnerability, control, and pain. Touching on ancient mythology, she connects past and present within her multidisciplinary practice and creates her own alter egos.

Based on the omnipresent term 'Industry 4.0', the publication #material4.0 reflects the interplay between the virtual world and the physical-real space. As part of the exhibition at Galerie Stadt Sindelfingen, 13 international artists, mostly 'digital natives', examine how computer dependent automation and digitalisation are reflected in an art context. How does art output change from production to the aesthetic? How is this kind of media used in posing artistic questions? The positions of digital art pioneers fill us in. The publication documents the exhibition with numerous illustrations of works and a collection of complementary texts. Twelve renowned national and international artists demonstrate how negative physical and psychological experiences can be transformed into a positive attitude to life, and contributions from academics complement and discuss the overcoming of pain.
