The book explores how collaboration between the EU and the UN has evolved and how the two entities collaborate both structurally and in day-to-day work. It shows how the EU acts within institutions such as the United Nations General Assembly and how UN agencies, funds and entities, such as UNHRC, UNICEF and UN Women, interact with the EU and its member states.

Through its analysis, the book demonstrates how, despite recent criticism, patterns of multilateralism and cooperation between regional and international institutions can be central to stable patterns of rules-based regional and global governance.

The shift from response to recovery is now noticeable as the world moves past the paralyzing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This book explores responses to the pandemic by international, regional, and local institutions, multilateral action, and crisis prevention efforts at different levels of governance, with a specific focus on the situation of women and children. The contributions in this volume address novel topics and expand the analysis to the different challenges faced by women and children, linking these to the UN''s Sustainable Development Goals, to create a holistic view of the true impact of the pandemic. The focus on international and regional cooperation provides further insights on how management of the COVID-19-induced crisis can be altered and improved. Immediate effects of the pandemic were focused on healthcare, but long-term and knock-on effects spread to different societal sectors and must be analyzed to ensure they will be addressed and, ultimately, resolved. 

This edited volume aims to address the gaps in research on the United Nations (UN)''s participation in intergovernmental relationships by delving into the working mechanisms of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The book offers a novel overview of the voting procedures of the UNSC and related outcomes in practice; most significantly, it examines members'' voting behaviour, veto power, power dynamics, and diplomatic means of sponsoring resolutions and forming coalitions in the Council. It also analyses the role of small, emerging, and regional powers inside the UNSC, alongside their trajectory into the power dynamics of this UN body. It assesses the intertwined relationship between the UN and the European Union (EU). Each chapter demonstrates the challenges and the workings of multilateralism in one of the most significant organisations for global cooperation.
