The problem of particle transport in extended systems is addressed in this book. It has important implications from both the conceptual and applied points of view. A community of researchers from different disciplines and fields is actively engaged in studying this problem, often using similar methodologies. The main subjects covered in this book are relevant to nonlinear diffusion in plasmas and to transport dynamics in accelerators and free electron lasers.

These proceedings comprise the contents of a major international conference on Perspectives of the Interacting Boson Model. Occasioned by the 20th Anniversary of this model, and attended by approx. 130 scientists from 29 countries, the topics focused on current and future research, which relates to the IBM. This model has now become one of the standard approaches to nuclear structure and has helped usher in a renaissance in that field and a new, unified perspective that focuses on dynamical symmetries and the key role of the valence nucleons. The algebraic approach fostered by the model is being extended to other fields, including nuclear reactions, molecular physics and baryon structure.

This volume collects the papers presented at the “Specialists'' Meeting on Nuclear Level Densities”, held in Bologna 15 - 17 November, 1989, which gathered most of the scientists working in the field. The papers cover all the major aspects of the level density problem both from the theoretical and the experimental viewpoint, including the subject of partial level densities. In particular, moment method, collective vector method, interacting boson model, static path approximation and combinatorial approach are discussed. Effects of the residual interactions and nuclear structure are also addressed, giving a state-of-art reveiw of our present knowledge on nuclear level densities.

The papers collected in this volume, presented at the workshop on ''Nonlinear Problems in Engineering'', held in ENEA Rome (Italy) from 6 - 7 May 1991, and sponsored by ENEA, report nonlinear problems of prevailing engineering interest. Both nonlinear static and dynamic topics are dealt with; in particular, plastic behavior of materials, elastic-plastic models, fracture mechanics, geophysical prospecting, theory of nonlinear control, mixing models for chemical reactors, nonlinear responses of structures, rotor dynamics, and impact loads on structures.

This workshop in nonlinear dynamics and mathematical physics, organized by the Italian Nuclear Energy Agency (ENEA) in Bologna, is intended to give an updated overview of modern trends in the field of nonlinear dynamics with emphasis on applications to physics, quantum theory, plasma physics and fluid dynamics, optics and electrodynamics, computer simulation and neural networks.
