This review describes the most recent advances in the study of the extragalactic soft X-ray background and what we can learn about its constituents. The deepest pointed observations with the ROSAT PSPC are discussed. The logN-logS relation is presented, which reaches to the faintest X-ray fluxes and to the highest AGN surface densities ever achieved. The N(>S) relation shows a 2 density in excess of 400 deg- at the faintest fluxes and a flattening below the Einstein Deep Survey limit. About 60% of the extragalactic background has been resolved in the deepest field. Detailed source spectra and first optical and radio identifications will be discussed. The results are put into perspective of the higher energy X -ray background. Key words: X-rays, background radiations, active galactic nuclei. 1. Many people liked the rst edition which appeared in 1998, just before the explosion of magni cent new data which have completely changed the face of astrophysical cosmology. Many of the agonies which had to be gone through in the rst edition have disappeared and, to many people’s amazement, including mine, there is now a concordance model for cosmology, the cosmologist’s equivalent of the particle physicist’s standard model. Just like the standard model, however, the concordance model creates as many problems as it solves. For Deborah, Mark and Sarah ''Not another book on cosmology!'', I hear the reader exclaim. ''Surely there are quite enough books on cosmology to satisfy everyone''s needs?'' I was asked by Springer-Verlag to expand into a full-length book the set of lecture notes that I prepared in 1988 for the First Astrophysics School organised by the European Astrophysics Doctoral Network. The set of notes was entitled Galaxy Formation and was published as a chapter of the vol­ ume Evolution of Galaxies: Astronomical Observations (eds. 1. Appenzeller, H. J. Habing and P. Lena, pages 1 to 93, Springer-Verlag Berlin, Heidelberg, 1989). In that chapter, I attempted to bridge the gap between elementary cosmology and the technical papers appearing in the literature, which can seem quite daunting on first encounter. The objective was to present the physical concepts and key results as clearly as possible as an introduction and guide to the technical literature. The revision of these lecture notes into a full-length book was delayed by other projects. Specifically, I am completing a three-volume work for Cam­ bridge University Press, entitled High Energy Astrophysics, (Volume 1, 1992; Volume 2, 1994; Volume 3, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge 1998). In general, sources of error and problems in these measurements are not determined by the apparatus itself. The most important new result IS that of Paul Henry (1971), who employed a radiometer mounted on a rotatmg platform suspended beneath a balloon. Because he employed a rotatmg platform he was able to look for amsotropy over a WIde area area of the sky (about one-half of the northern hemIsphere), not Just a CIrcle of con- stant dechnatIOn. In a smgle mght, he was able to obtam enough data to establIsh a value for the component of the 'dIpole' anisotropy parallel to the spm aXIS of the Earth It IS LI T = (3. 2 +- 0 8) x 10-3 K in the direction (X = I Oh-ll hand () = - 30 .HIS results are conSIstent WIth the earher results of Conkhn (1969), but provIde the Im- portant addItIonal datum that the motion of the Earth with respect to the co-movmg coordinate system (and parallel to the spm aXIS of the Earth) IS small. MeanwhIle, Conklin refined and repeated hIS earher measurement and reduced the statIstical error. The results of his work are reported m the IAU Symp. 44 (1972).
