These volumes present the Proceedings of the "Third Interna tional Workshop on Solar Thermal Central Receiver Systems" or ganized by the DFVLR and held in Konstanz, Federal Republic of Germany, June, 1986. The Workshop was the continuation of the conferences in Claremont, USA, 1982 and in Varese, Italy, 1984 on the subject of "Central Receiver Projects" and of the con ferences in Stuttgart, Federal Republic of Germany, 1983 and in Atlanta, USA, 1985 on the subject of "High Temperature Solar Technology and Application". The success of the Workshop was indicated by the participation of 113 scientists from 11 nations. The Workshop was mainly ad dressed to persons actively working in the field of "Solarthermal". But also participants from neighboring areas of investigation were welcomed, e.g. those from Photovoltaics who deal with temperature effects. Several small Solar Thermal Power Plants have been successfully operated in recent years; their results enable the scientific and technical community to judge on technical viabilities, as sess operational characteristics, and evaluate and extrapolate thermal and electrical performances. Summarizing and comparing these experiences was the topic of the first part of the Work shop which dealt with "Plants".

The Technology Program GAST was executed from 1981 to 1987 as a German-Spanish joint program aiming at the development and the investigation of necessary solar specific components and software for a gas-cooled tower power station of medium size. After the tests had been successfully completed at the Plata forma Solar de Almeria in 1987, the proceedings are now presented to inform the experts and the public about these developments and their results. Not intending to anticipate a detailed valuation of the results, however, we as the project monitors of the Technology program resume that the intended aims are nearly entirely achieved and that principally the way for the construction and operation of a gas cooled solar tower power plant has been prepared. Essential for this successful completion were not only a promising concept, a careful design, a precise plan ning, solid fabrication and installation as well as careful tests, but also the extraordinarily good cooperation between the engaged companies, institutes, organisations and advisory groups.

In den beiden Bänden werden die Beiträge zum "Solarchemischen Kolloquium", veranstaltet von der DLR am 12./13. Juni 1989 in Köln, dokumentiert. Band I konzentriert sich auf die Grundlagen, Band II auf einen besonders wichtigen Einsatzbereich der Solarchemie. Das Ziel war die Vermittlung grundlegenden Wissens und Verständnisses für die Solarchemie. Die von der Sonne zur Verfügung gestellte qualitativ hochwertige Strahlungsenergie geringer Dichte kann durch konzentrierende Systeme in der Solartechnologie auf sehr hohe Energiestromdichten gebracht werden. Sehr hohe Temperaturen lassen sich erreichen, und große Temperatur-Transienten können nutzbar gemacht werden. Neben Anwendungen in der Thermochemie eröffnen sich neue interessante Gebiete in der Hochtemperaturphotochemie, der Hochtemperaturelektrochemie und der Photoelektrochemie. Die solare Detoxifizierung von Problemabfällen ist ein potentiell attraktiver Schwerpunkt aus dem Spektrum zahlreicher Anwendungen der Solarenergie für chemische und physikalisch-chemische Verfahren, deren Praktikabilität es auszuloten gilt. Die Sondermüllproblematik verlangt immer drängender nach einer Lösung. Deshalb wird dieser Schwerpunkt von der Darstellung der Grundlagen des ersten Bandes abkoppelt und das Thema des zweiten Bandes sein.

The German R+D program "Solares Testzentrum Almeria" (SOTA) provides the scientific basis for the realization of advanced solar technologies including facility modifications, component tests and new lines of development. One of the working packages, WP 300, addresses the "Scientific Support" by the performance of preparatory studies, exploratory laboratory activities and qualified expertise. Universities, research institutes and company R+D entities in Germany are enabled to treat the following aspects: meteorological, system and cost investigations, development of important components as concentrator, receiver, storage, utilization of solar energy for process heat and chemical reactions. In 1988 and 1989 the studies concentrated on the development of components. The reports of the activities were finalized recently and collected in the present volumes. The final reports were printed as received under the responsibility of the authors. This monograph on energy technology (power plants) and the environmental sciences is intended for researchers, engineers and other professionals.

Sie beinhaltet zum einen die Fortsetzung und abschliessende Bewertung der Materialuntersuchungen zum Bau eines Sckundarkonzentrators (feil I Vertragsnr. 5-370-4355), zum anderen werden der Bau mehrerer Vormodelle zu den mog- lichen Konzentratorformen und Messergebnisse zu diesen Modellen vorgestellt, wo- bei unter Berucksichtigung der aufwendigen Fertigung der harten Spiegelbasis- materialien zur Kostenersparnis Iinearisierte Formen untersucht wurden, mit und ohne Teilbereich mit keramikahnlichen optischen Eigenschaften (Glanzkarton). Polierte Keramik in unbeschiehteter Form ist nur bedingt einsetzbar, da sie bei nahezu senkrechtem Strahlungseinfall einen direkten Reflexionsgrad von ca 9% zeigt (A1 TiO ). Die 27T-Reflexion dagegen kann fur weisse, reine Keramik uber 90% 2 s liegen (Hartporzellan). Erst durch Beschichtungen lassen sich die Werte fur die direkte Reflexion deutlich erhohen, wobei die Oberflachenbeschaffenheit eine we- sentliche Rolle spielt. Eine Beschichtung von TiN auf Glas erzielt Werte uber 90%, jedoch ist diese Schicht nicht uber das gesamte Sonnenspektrum einsetzbar.Ausserdem ist die Schicht oxidationsgefahrdet, eine zusatzliche Goldschicht ware moglicherweise ein Schutz dagegen. Bei den Modellen ( CPC, Trumpet ) wurde die Intensitatsverteilung in einigen Schnitten in der Austrittsapcrtur aufgenommen, zum Teil bei unterschiedlichen Einfallswinkeln. Daraus wurde die Verstarkung innerhalb der Schnitte und der Fluss im Vergleich zum Zustand ohne Konzcntrator ermittelt. Durch den Einsatz einc.

The solar thermal central receiver is a key component of any solar thermal plant. The efficiency with which a receiver accomplishes its function is of central interest in solar thermal technology. Solar thermal receivers have been built, evaluated, and operated in many countries. These experiences have provided a knowledge base on receiver performance and its evaluation. At the same time, the variety of methods and approaches used by different researchers has caused occasional difficulties in the interpretation of performance evaluation results reported in the literature. The rationale for this report, therefore, derives from two sources. First is the need to facilitate the evaluation of the performance of solar receivers by providing a central document defining standards for such endeavors; second, to enable an easy interpretation and comparative evaluation of different receiver concepts for which performance has been evaluated in different countries.The primary contribution of this report is deemed to be the definition of a minimum set of paramenters essential for the evaluation of receiver performance, as well as the selection and recommendation of the methods that have proved to be the most successful for the measurement and calculation of these parameters. An extensive list of references is provided with each chapter. B Projektaufgaben, die Lösungswege aufzeigen für die Berechnung und Gestaltung von komplexeren Übungsaufgaben, die einerseits als komplette Aufgaben im Unterricht erarbeitet, andererseits aber auch im Rahmen von Gruppenarbeiten als Hausarbeiten durchgeführt werden können. Die in den Lösungswegen angeführten Gleichungen beziehen sich ebenso wie die Tabellenhinweise auf das oben angeführte Lehrwerk. Im Gegensatz zu den Übungsbeispielen im Lehrbuch - hier wird jedes Maschinenelement für sich allein betrachtet- soll bei den Projektaufgaben das Zusammenspiel der einzelnen Elemente und deren gegenseitige Beeinflussung dargestellt werden (vielfach führen Änderungen eines Teiles bezüglich ihrer Folgewirkung zu Änderungen der Nachbarteile).
