Examen del encuentro entre Europa y América, y las transformaciones ocurridas mediante un proceso que comenzó con del descubrimiento y continúa hasta el presente siglo XXI. El autor muestra el tejido de las relaciones entre diversos modos de vida, creencias, organizaciones sociales, leyes y costumbres, políticas y economías, que originan así un nuevo modo de civilización Occidental.

El presente volumen ha sido organizado en tres partes. En la primera se analiza el surgimiento del federalismo desde fines del siglo XVIII hasta la primera mitad del siglo XIX; la segunda parte examina la consolidación del federalismo gracias a las reformas liberales, y en la tercera se ilustran las transformaciones del federalismo por efecto del nacionalismo en lo que va de nuestro siglo.

El primer volumen de esta obra presenta las dimensiones estructurales de la evolución americana. Los autores introducen al lector en los procesos básicos que conforman el espacio geohistórico, proponen las formas que adoptaron los componentes económicos y sociales y señalan las transformaciones que ocurrieron en el ámbito de la cultura material y de los imaginarios colectivos.
