peter of Auvergne (+1304) is one of the most productive and most influential commentators of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Paris, At the end of the 13th century Peter actually moved to the upper theological faculty, where he argued a number of quodlibeta. This volume of conference proceedings represents the first examination of the work of Peter of Auvergne as a whole. In addition, biographical information has been interpreted in new ways. Many of the contributions present research on aspects of his commentaries on the logical, natural philosophical, metaphysical, ethical, and political works of Aristotle, as well as aspects of his theological works. A comparison with contemporaneous authors demonstrates that Peter presents a thoroughly distinctive line of thought and that previous classifications must be differentiated or even discarded. In addition, Peter develops an astounding history of reception with some of his works that continued into early modernity.

Thomas Aquinas' Summa theologiae is one of the classics in the history of theology and philosophy. Beyond its influence in the Middle Ages, its importance is also borne out by the fact that it became the subject of commentary. During the sixteenth century it was gradually adopted as the official text for the teaching of scholastic theology in most European Catholic universities. As a result, university professors throughout Europe and the colonial Americas started lecturing and producing commentaries on the Summa and using it as a starting point for many theological and philosophical discussions. Some of the works of major authors such as Vitoria, Soto, Molina, Suarez and Arriaga are nothing more than commentaries on the Summa. This book is the first scholarly endeavour to investigate this commentary tradition. As it examines late scholasticism against its institutional backdrop and contains studies of manuscripts and texts unpublished, it will remain an authoritative source for the research of late scholasticism.Contributors: Igor Agostini (University of Salento), Monica Brinzei (CNRS-IRHT, Paris), William Duba (University of Fribourg), Matthew Gaetano (Hillsdale College), Helen Hattab (University of Houston), Lidia Lanza (University of Lisbon), Mauro Mantovani (Salesian Pontifical University), Daniel D. Novotny and Tomas Machula (University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice), Chris Schabel (University of Cyprus), Jean-Luc Solere (Boston College), Marco Toste (University of Fribourg), Andreas Wagner (Goethe University of Frankfurt), Ueli Zahnd (University of Geneva)

The most influential question-commentary on the Politics in the Middle AgesThis volume is the first complete critical edition of Peter of Auvergne's Questiones super I-VII libros Politicorum. The Questiones was produced at the Faculty of Arts of Paris sometime between late 1291 and 1296 and is the earliest surviving commentary in question form on Aristotle's Politics. As the introduction explains, the Questiones was philosophically innovative and became the most influential question-commentary on the Politics in the Middle Ages. The volume also includes a critical edition of an earlier oral report (reportatio) of Peter's teaching on Books I-II and part of III which became the basis for those sections of the Questiones. This volume is of interest to scholars of medieval philosophy and the history of political thought and is a reference point for future research on the medieval reception of Aristotle's Politics and medieval Aristotelian practical philosophy more broadly.
