This notion is one that has preoccupied the European and Anglo-American cultural imaginary since at least early modernity.Milieus of Minutiae brings together an interdisciplinary group of scholars to investigate various forms and appearances of minutiae prior to and beyond the advent of magnification. The collection illuminates connections between the empirical practices and technologies with which minutiae have come to be associated and the broader, more diffuse discourses—from the philosophical to the artistic—that have attended theories of smallness before and after Hooke’s Micrographia. Placing essays on Renaissance poetry, Romantic fiction, and matters of punctuation alongside essays on early modern germ theory and the optics of microscopic technology, this rigorously framed volume extends from sixteenth-century pathology to twentieth-century architectural theory, natural science to literature and art.

Literatur im "Jahrhundert des Kindes" - Robert Walser und die Entdeckung der Kindheitum 1900."Ich war eigentlich nie Kind, und deshalb, glaube ich zuversichtlich, wird an mir immer etwas Kindheitliches haften bleiben." Diese Erkenntnis aus Walsers Tagebuchroman "Jakob von Gunten" formuliert das Programm eines literarischen Werkes, dessen eigenwillige Ästhetik immer wieder den Vorwurf des Kindlichen und Naiven auf sich gezogen hat.Mareike Schildmann rekonstruiert den Einsatz einer Poetik der Kindheit bei Walser vor dem Hintergrund einer Wissensgeschichte um 1900, in der das Kind zum maßgeblichen Medium der anthropologischen, politischen und kulturellen Selbstverständigung wird. Zwischen dem humanwissenschaftlichen Projekt einer Erforschung der "Seele des Kindes", das von neuen Disziplinen wie der Entwicklungspsychologie, der Experimentellen Pädagogik und der Psychiatrie vorangetrieben wird, und dem emphatischen Anliegen seiner Befreiung in den zeitgenössischen Reformbewegungen, werden die diskursiven und ästhetischen Fluchtlinien eines neuen übergreifenden Interesses am Kind entfaltet. Damit leistet die Studie eine Neuverortung von Walsers Werk innerhalb einer modernen Wissenskultur und ihrer Institutionen, die sich um 1900 im Zeichen eines umfassenden gesellschaftlichen Erziehungsauftrags formieren. Sie wirft zugleich ein neues Licht auf die poetologische Signatur der Walser`schen Schreibszene und ihren notorischen Gesten der Verkleinerung.
