How can we address the seemingly endless conflicts in the world, particularly those arising from misunderstandings of Islam by both Muslims and non-Muslims? Preventing Violence and Achieving World Peace: The Contributions of the Gülen Movement presents the essays of eight scholars who consider the diverse ways in which the Gülen Movement or hizmet («service to others») – inspired by contemporary Turkish social philosopher Fetullah Gülen – has worked to answer this question. Drawing from various intellectual and theological sources, particularly Sufism, these essays indicate multiple instances of positive interfaith and/or multicultural dialogue. In addition, they consider how the writings of Gülen and the works of the Gülen Movement, through an extensive program of education and communication, have contributed significantly to efforts that oppose violence and shape universal peace.

In the 15 years of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) pandemic much has been learnt about its natural history and complications. It is clear that the lung is a major target organ both for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and a wide array of infectious and non-infectious pulmonary complications. A great deal of information on the epidemiology, microbiology, immunology, clinical features, diagnosis and management of these pulmonary complications has accumulated during the past 15 years. Given the enormous explosion in information, it is now timely to bring together this knowledge in this 25-chapter volume on AIDS and respiratory medicine. The contributors to this volume are prominent epidemiologists, doctors, microbiologists and scientists from Europe, USA and Africa. Professors Chretien and Enarson give a masterful account of the epidemiology of lung complications of HIV. Drs Zumla, Rowland Jones and Professor McMichael give a detailed summary of the lung immune responses to HIV. They outline normal lung defenses and discuss the consequences of HIV infection on them. The pulmonary radiological features of HIV and its complications as seen in the USA and Europe are illustrated by Professors Armstrong and Dee and this is compared and contrasted by Professor Tshibwabwa-Tumba who brings together his vast experience of chest X-rays in AIDS patients from Central Africa. Drs O''Doherty and Miller deal with the uses, and potential applications, of nuclear medicine in imaging of the chest in AIDS patients.

In the almost ten years since the publication of the first edition of An Atlas of Differential Diagnosis in HIV Disease, there have been significant developments in clinical HIV care. The growth of AIDS in the developing world is continuing at an alarming rate, the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy has presented new complications, and the increased longevity of HIV-infected patients has changed the issues involved in long-term HIV management. Completely revised to reflect these changes and incorporating new clinical information, this second edition includes:Increased coverage of new and re-emerging diseases such as tuberculosis, tumors, and more esoteric diseases Discussions of drug-related side-effects such as the hyperlipidemias produced by antiretroviral drugs The different categories of antiretroviral drug therapy, such as nuceleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, non-nucleosides, and protease inhibitors Updates infections and fungal diseases of the skin and the side-effects of drug interactions Revised presentation of Pneumocystis, lung tumors, and lymphocytic interstitial pneumoniaSuccinct explanations combined with copious illustrations make this an essential resource for the care and management of HIV patients.
