Bokens huvudpersoner är "de sista musikeleverna", de som började sin musikerbana vid landets regementen under 1940- och 50-talet. Det var inom det militära som det stora flertalet fick möjlighet att skaffa sig en kostnadsfri musikutbildning vid denna tid. Här får vi följa sju förutvarande militärmusikers musikaliska resa, från de första trevande dagarna som grötrocksklädda musikelever i regementsmatsalarna, till musikkåren, på mässen, i logementen, på lektionerna, i dansorkestrarna, storbanden och i orkesterföreningarna. Vi möter dem också som militärer, regionmusiker, orkestermusiker, lärare, cirkelledare och som musikledare inom den kommunala musikskolan, och följer dem fram till dagens pensionärstillvaro där de fortfarande har en stark och aktiv anknytning till det lokala och i vissa fall även det nationella musiklivet. Deras livsberättelser står i fokus och beskriver sju decennier av såväl personliga som samhälleliga perspektiv på musikaliskt lärande. Genom den möjlighet till utbildning som de själva fick, och att de därefter aktivt har medverkat musikaliskt och pedagogiskt i samhället, har de bidragit till en betydelsefull demokratiseringsprocess inom det musikpedagogiska området i Sverige. Det handlar om ett viktigt skede i välfärdsbygget under 1900-talet, där allt fler fick möjlighet att medverka i och påverka musiklivet i Sverige.
Maria Westvall är lektor i musikpedagogik vid Musikhögskolan, Örebro universitet. Forskningsprojektet Den lärande musikern. En studie om militärmusiker och deras musikaliska utveckling under ett livslångt musikerskap, med finansiering från Vetenskapsrådet, ligger till grund för denna bok.
