This collection focuses on different expeditions and their role in the process of knowledge acquisition from the eighteenth century onwards. It investigates various forms of scientific practice conducted during, after and before expeditions, and it places this discussion into the scientific context of experiments. In treating expeditions as experiments in a heuristic sense, we also propose that the expedition is a variation on the laboratory in which different practices can be conducted and where the transformation of uncertain into certain knowledge is tested. The experimental positioning of the expedition brings together an ensemble of techniques, strategies, material agents and social actors, and illuminates the steps leading from observation to facts and documentation. The chapters show the variety of scientific interests that motivated expeditions with their focus on natural history, geology, ichthyology, botany, zoology, helminthology, speleology, physical anthropology, oceanography, meteorology and magnetism.

This book presents recent achievements in interdisciplinary history of geological studies as well as new perspectives on the development of geological concepts. There is the substantive conceptual aspect, as the regional history of geology in and about Armenia and its uniqueness allow us to point out essential core lines of the history of earth sciences as a discipline in general. For instance, topics such as Noah's Ark and the Flood imply the relations to several phases of the history of geology from the early modern period to the twenty century. The volume brings up a wide spectrum of geological contents: it includes different concepts, cultures and topics of geological debate including diluvialism, antropomorphic approaches, cave studies, volcanology, racial science, alpinism, the Continental Drift, earthquake studies and petroleum research. Some of the contributions are based on cultural knowledge perspectives, some are interested in biographical research, others see history of geology through the lens of geologists.

Die Erdwissenschaftler der Habsburgermonarchie genossen im 19. Jahrhundert höchste internationale Reputation. Diese beruhte nicht nur auf ihrem außerordentlichen Fachwissen und ihrer Produktivität, sondern auch auf einer gelungenen Kommunikation.Ohne Rücksicht auf Status und Hierarchie integrierten die Protagonisten der Geologischen Reichsanstalt alle Repräsentanten der Naturforschung sowohl der Provinz und der wissenschaftlichen Räume Wiens als auch die interessierten Laien in ihr reges interaktiv-offenes Austauschsystem. Die Verbindungen zur politischen Elite, zur Bürokratie sowie auch zu den Medien war eine stetig intensivierte, die bereits im Vormärz ausgebildet worden war, was dem späteren Kampf gegen die Auflösung und Unterordnung der Geologischen Reichsanstalt unter die Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien zugutekam. Franz von Hauers Tagebuch ist eine außerordentliche Quelle, die uns in die ansonsten verborgene Welt besonders der mündlichen Kommunikation führt.

Wo findet sich eigentlich das Wissen, das an der Universität Wien produziert wird? Es ist nicht nur auf Bücher und sonstige ''Speicher'' beschränkt, sondern zirkuliert und materialisiert sich auch im öffentlichen Raum der Stadt Wien. Wenn sich fachkundige Fährtenleser/innen auf Spurensuche in dieser Stadt begeben, dann werden sie an ganz unerwarteten Erinnerungsorten fündig. Auf ihren Wegen stoßen sie auf ägyptische Pyramiden, Medaillen und einen Baum in einem Park, ja sogar auf einen in Wien gedrehten Kriminalfilm. Aber was haben das Grab von Falco, bestimmte Straßennamen, öffentliche Denkmäler, der Judenplatz oder eine nach Hertha Firnberg benannte Schule mit jener Arbeit zu tun, die an der Historisch-Kulturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Wien geleistet wird? Forschende Fährtensucher/innen geben Aufschluss darüber. Sie sind nicht nur ''alten Römern'' und früheren Wissenschaftler/innen auf der Spur, sondern auch verzweigten Fäden und Querverweisen zu ihren eigenen wissenschaftlichen Fächern.

Franz Unger, Paläobotaniker, Biologe, Zellforscher, Ökologe, Geologe, Evolutionist und Kulturwissenschaftler, wurde schon oft als ›österreichischer Darwin‹ bezeichnet. Bereits vor Darwin wirkend, verdient sein Werk mehr als eine solche assoziative Gleichsetzung, nämlich eine seriöse wissenschaftshistorische Analyse, durch welche die Vielfalt von Ungers innovativen Ansätzen in epistemischen Zusammenhängen verortet wird. Die Einheit in den Zugängen aller Beiträge liegt in der Konzentration auf lokale wie auch internationale Kontexte, Debatten und Erkenntnisziele der Arbeiten Ungers. Die Vielfalt ergibt sich aus der interdisziplinären Zusammensetzung der AutorInnen und den unterschiedlichen methodischen Zugriffen auf Ungers Konzepte.

Alles, was bisher über den Werdegang des Naturforschers Nikolaus Joseph Jacquin erzählt wurde, basiert weitgehend auf dessen Selbstdarstellungen. Dieses Buch zieht in neuer Weise unterschiedliche Quellen heran. Die beiden Autorinnen differenzieren den Aspekt von Jacquins Selbstformung und diskutieren, wie dieser von seinen Mäzenen Gerard van Swieten sowie Carl von Linné und von dem weltweiten Wissensaustausch mit Naturforschern abhängt. Anhand der Wissensräume (botanische Gärten und chemisches Labor) werden die Wissenskonstituierung und Statusbildung analysiert. Die Studie ist dabei auf die Praxis der Naturgeschichte ausgerichtet. So legt sie etwa offen, dass Jacquin seine Karibikexpedition (1754–1759) in den Tropen mit einer Perücke bewältigte und gemeinsam mit Begleitern mehr als 104 Paar Schuhe verschliss. Everything that has so far been related about the career of the natural scientist Nikolaus Joseph Jacquin is largely based on his own self-portrayals. The present book makes novel use of a range of different source materials. It distinguishes the aspect of Jacquin''s self-fashioning, and discusses this in relation to his patrons Gerard van Swieten and Carl von Linné and their exchange of knowledge. Using knowledge spaces (botanical gardens and chemical laboratory), the constitution of knowledge and the creation of status are analysed. The facts that Jacquin undertook his Caribbean expedition (1754–1759) in the tropics wearing a wig and that, together with his attendants, he wore out more than 104 pairs of shoes, are details that are revealed by a study focussed on the practice of natural history.
