This book focuses on the role of popular music in the rise of populism in Europe, centring on the music-related processes of sociocultural normalisation and the increasing prevalence of populist discourses in contemporary society. In its innovative combination of approaches drawing from (ethno)musicology, sociology, and political science, as well as media and cultural studies, this book develops a culture-oriented approach to populism. Based on shared research questions, an original theoretical framework and a combination of innovative methodologies that pay attention to the specific socio-historical contexts, taking into account musical material as well as processes of reception, the five chapters in this volume offer detailed analyses of the nexus of popular music and populism in Hungary, Italy, Austria, Sweden and Germany. All of these countries have seen a marked increase in populist parties and discourses over the last years, as well as significant interactions between populism and popular music. Die Jazzforschung hat sich seit dem Entstehen der sog. New Jazz Studies erheblich weiterentwickelt. Gleichzeitig hat eine Zersplitterung der Forschungsansätze zu Jazz stattgefunden, die dazu führt, dass das Feld wenig kohärent wirkt. Ziel des Handbuchs ist es daher nicht, einen vollumfänglichen Überblick über die Jazzforschung, die Jazzgeschichte oder die Entwicklung aller Jazzkulturen zu geben. Stattdessen sollen angesichts der vielfältigen Denkweisen und Perspektiven im Bereich Jazz zentrale Diskurse erörtert werden, um sowohl Forschenden als auch fachfremden Leser:innen gesicherte Informationen zu bieten und sie dabei zu unterstützen, sich über Jazz und Jazzforschung zu orientieren.

In the early years of the Cold War, Western nations increasingly adopted strategies of public diplomacy involving popular music. While the diplomatic use of popular music was initially limited to such genres as jazz, the second half of the 20th century saw a growing presence of various popular genres in diplomatic contexts, including rock, pop, bluegrass, flamenco, funk, disco, and hip-hop, among others.This volume illuminates the interrelation of popular music and public diplomacy from a transnational and transdisciplinary angle. The contributions argue that, as popular music has been a crucial factor in international relations, its diplomatic use has substantially impacted the global musical landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries.
