Rakennettu elinympäristö on enemmän kuin aikakauden tai politiikan heijaste. Se on myös tekijöidensä tahdonilmaus ja osoitus kyvystä tavoitteelliseen toimintaan yli ajan. Suomalaisessa kaupunkipolitiikassa on hukassa sekä itse kaupunki että yhteys tapahtuneeseen kaupunkikehitykseen. Nykyistä kehitystä ohjaa raskas, epämääräinen, hallinnon ja politiikan ulkorajoille muodostunut koneisto, joka ei riittävällä tavalla pysty vastaamaan sen enempää kaupungistumisen kuin hyvinvointiyhteiskunnankaan haasteisiin. Kaupunkipolitiikalle on nähdäksemme löydettävä tavoitteet, jotka selättävät haitalliset, itseään ylläpitävät toiminnalliset rakenteet ja niistä kumpuavat haaleat ratkaisut. Keskeistä kaupunkipolitiikan muotoutumisessa on nostaa jalustalle perinteeseemme keskeisesti kuulunut paikallisen yhdessä tekemisen eetos. Roolit, oikeudet ja velvollisuudet on määriteltävä selkeiksi eikä niitä voi korvat epämääräisin kumppanuuspuhein. Toiminnan oikeuttaminen tulisi perustua osallistavan demokraattisen prosessin lisäksi lopputuloksen arviointiin. Keinot ja tavoitteet on pystyttävä erottamaan toisistaan. Toiminnan oikeutusta arvioida laadullisten määreiden kautta - yhteiskunnan, ihanan kaupungin ja ihmisen lähtökohdista.
