Adaptive reuse is a design practice where changes in the building structure go along with new programs and functions. Many concerns of the day that are the hallmark of current social discourse can equally be communicated through the vocabulary of design and reuse. Six common themes mirroring those of society in the new millennium are discernable in the current adaptive reuse practice: appropriation, ecology, equity, memory & redemption, identity and authenticity. Selected articles from the IntAR Interventions and Adaptive Reuse Journal of the last ten years speak to the social issues of the recent decade. The introductory essay positions shifting norms of working from home or remote learning in the light of their revision through adaptive reuse, for example the post-pandemic repercussions on office towers and the classroom.

Narrative environments are a compositional strategy to re-present the times in a life of a building. Narratives associate the many different times and spaces inherent in a particular space at a specific time. The reuse of materials, transformative interventions and the continuation of cultural phenomena result in densely woven narratives. The buildings, projects andessays of the current Int AR volume explore the stories that inhabit spaces.

Eine belastbare Methodezu entwickeln, um den Ressourceneinsatz zu bewerten, ist das Ziel diesesBuches. Notwendig ist dies, da das starke Wirtschaftswachstum der letztenJahrzehnte zu einer intensiven Beanspruchung natürlicher Ressourcen geführthat. Mit ihrer steigenden Nutzung gehen auch zusätzliche Belastungen der Umweltsowie Restriktionen der Verfügbarkeit von Ressourcen einher. Aus diesen Gründenist ein effizienter Einsatz von Ressourcen als wichtiger Beitrag zu einernachhaltigen Entwicklung erforderlich. Die ESSENZ-Methode (Integrierte Methodezur ganzheitlichen Berechnung/Messung von Ressourceneffizienz) wurde in einerKooperation der Technischen Universität Berlin mit den IndustriepartnernDaimler AG, Deutsches Kupferinstitut Berufsverband e. V., Evonik Industries AG,Siemens AG, ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG und Wissenschaftlicher Gerätebau Dr.Ing. Herbert Knauer GmbH entwickelt. Sie unterstützt die umfassende Messung undBewertung von Ressourceneffizienz innerhalb der vier Dimensionen„Verfügbarkeit“, „Gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz“, „Umweltauswirkungen“ und„Nutzen“.  Um diese vier Dimensionen wissenschaftlichabzubilden, werden 21 anwendbare Indikatoren entwickelt und vorgestellt.Die ESSENZ-Methode kannsowohl für die Analyse und Optimierung eines einzelnen Produktes als auch für denVergleich mehrerer Produktalternativen verwendet werden. Ihre Anwendbarkeit istfür Metalle, und fossile Rohstoffe  bereitserprobt.

BIM ist nach dem Stufenplan für Deutschland »eine kooperative Arbeitsmethodik, mit der auf der Grundlage digitaler Modelle eines Bauwerks die für seinen Lebenszyklus relevanten Informationen und Daten konsistent erfasst, verwaltet und in einer transparenten Kommunikation zwischen den Beteiligten ausgetauscht oder für die weitere Bearbeitung übergeben werden«.Vor diesem Hintergrund hilft virtuelles Bauen, Zeitpläne und Kosten einzuhalten und Risiken zu minimieren. Planänderungen können zeit- und kosteneffizient über sämtliche Realisierungsebenen hinweg interpretations- und fehlerfrei realisiert werden. Schließlich profitiert das Facility Management durch die konsequente Weiternutzung der digitalen Gesamtdokumentation in der Betriebs- und Nutzungsphase.Dieses Fachbuch beschreibt den Status Quo dieser neuen Disziplin, die sich zunehmend z.B. bei öffentlichen Ausschreibungen – auch international – zu einer verbindlichen Konventionentwickelt. In diesem Kontext werden neueste Erkenntnisse und Trends für die Anwendung der Methode BIM in der Praxis in den Gewerken Trinkwasser, Energie und Brandschutz reflektiert sowie auch die rechtlichen Aspekte zukunftsweisend erläutert.
