Åren 1980 och 1981 var den svenska inkomstfördelningen som jämnast. Därefter har inkomstskillnaderna ökat. De är dock fortfarande mindre än i de flesta andra länder. Traditionella fördelningspolitiska analyser tittar just på enskilda inkomstår. Men man kan även utgå från ett mer långsiktigt perspektiv och se till individers inkomster under ett helt liv, eller åtminstone en längre tidsperiod. I stället för att titta på inkomstfördelningen i termer av utfall går det se på hur möjligheterna till goda inkomster är jämnt fördelade. Begreppet inkomstfördelning har således många dimensioner. SNS Välfärdsrapport 2011 sätter fokus på inkomstfördelningen i Sverige med syfte att ge en nyanserad beskrivning och analys av den svenska inkomstfördelningen i ett internationellt perspektiv. Författare är Anders Björklund och Markus Jäntti, båda professorer och verksamma vid SOFI (Institutet för social forskning) vid Stockholms universitet.
