Der Sammelband dokumentiert die Vorträge einer gleichnamigen Expertentagung, die 1999 am Zentralarchiv für Empirische Sozialforschung in Köln stattfand. Die Beiträge beschäftigen sich zum einen in einer eher wissenschaftssoziologischen Perspektive mit der Entwicklung und den Zukunftsperspektiven der Empirischen Wahlforschung in Deutschland. Darüber hinaus werden eine Reihe empirischer Längsschnittanalysen des Wählerverhaltens präsentiert, die auf der Grundlage der Deutschen Nationalen Wahlstudien der Jahre 1949 bis 1998 vorgenommen wurden. Diese Daten sind dem Sammelband zusammen mit dem "Continuity Guide der Deutschen Wahlforschung", einer Datenbank aller in diesen Studien erhobenen Variablen, auf einer CD-ROM beigefügt. Ein weiterer Abschnitt des Bandes beschäftigt sich mit den zukünftigen Herausforderungen der Empirischen Wahlforschung in der Mediendemokratie.

In den Wochen vor der Bundestagswahl 2002 deutete alles auf einen Regierungswechsel hin. Gleichwohl wurde die rot-grüne Bundesregierung unter Gerhard Schröder am 22. September 2002 knapp im Amt bestätigt. Dieser Last-Minute-Swing wird im Zusammenhang mit langfristigen Veränderungstrends des Wählerverhaltens als das Ergebnis einer zunehmenden Individualisierung der Wahlentscheidung gedeutet. Kurzfristige Einflussfaktoren gewinnen demnach gegenüber den langfristigen Prägekräften der Wahlentscheidung an Bedeutung. Professionelle Wahlkampfführung und ein geschicktes Themenmanagement werden zu wichtigen Voraussetzungen des Wahlerfolgs. Vor diesem allgemeinen Hintergrund wird aufgezeigt, welche Rolle der drohende Krieg im Irak, die Flutkatastrophe und die "TV-Duelle" von Gerhard Schröder und Edmund Stoiber für die Wahlentscheidung bei der Bundestagswahl 2002 gespielt haben.

Im Rahmen der Deutschen Parteimitgliederstudie 2009 wurden rund 9.400 Mitglieder der sechs im Deutschen Bundestag vertretenen Parteien nach ihren soziodemographischen Merkmalen, ihren Einstellungen und Motiven sowie nach Art und Umfang ihrer innerparteilichen Beteiligung befragt. Das Buch gewährt auf der Grundlage dieser Studie Einblicke in das Innere der bundesdeutschen Parteiendemokratie: Wer wird Mitglied in den deutschen Parteien? In welchem Ausmaß und in welcher Art und Weise werden Bürger in ihnen aktiv? Welche politischen Einstellungen weisen Parteimitglieder auf, gerade auch im Vergleich zu den Wählerschaften ihrer Parteien? Wie zufrieden sind die Mitglieder mit ihren Parteien? Wie reagieren sie auf Unzufriedenheit und welchen innerparteilichen Reformbedarf sehen sie?

To a largeextent, his work, which was critical for the formation of differential geometry and topology, was motivated by problems arising in the analysis of the n-body problem ([38], p. 183). As it turned out, even by confining oneselfto questions ofqualitativenature, the general n-body problem could not be solved. Rather, simplified models were treated, like planar motion or the restricted 3-body problem, where the motion of a test particle did not influence the other two bodies.
