Presenting results of original research as well reviewing and synthesizing existing studies, the publication provides an in-depth analysis of Sri Lanka's youth unemployment. The analysis follows the "4Es" conceptual framework by focusing on four key labor market aspects: employment creation, employability, entrepreneurship, and equal opportunity. In each of these areas, the publication describes main outcomes and trends, analyzes key issues, and proposes policy recommendations: Among obstacles to employment creation, the publication singles out restrictive labor market institutions that contribute to perverse labor incentives (including waiting for public sector jobs) and to labor market duality, thereby pushing workers to worse paying and also otherwise less attractive informal sector jobs. The analysis of employability shows that education system provides skills more suited for public sector, and that transition from university to work is difficult for most, with social status and the field of study, among others, determining the timing and type of employment obtained by graduates.The chapter on entrepreneurship shows that relatively few young Sri Lankan have access to training and have financial resources available to start their own enterprises, and that the prevailing social culture also represents an obstacle. In the area of equal opportunity, the volume documents the existence of a gender wage gap that cannot be explained by "productive" characteristics of workers, as young women in Sri Lanka have better characteristics than men, but are underpaid, in all sectors and among all ethnic groups, and it claims that a system of job rationing is partly based on class-based skills and social assets, putting young people from rural backgrounds at disadvantage. The volume also discusses psychological stresses and other consequences on youth of the decades of violence, including long-lasting ethnic conflict.

Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, grade: A, UNITEC New Zealand, language: English, abstract: digiPROOF is a payment system which is based on biometrics and allows customers to pay with their fingerprint. EDEKA, a big German supermarket chain has introduced the digiPROOF system in one of their stores to test how customers accept the system. Up to now, customer reactions have been very positive and EDEKA is at the moment implementing the system in several other stores and plans to roll out the system Germany wide in the long run. In the past years a great variety of new and innovative payment systems have been introduced into the market. None of them however could gain a substantial market share and replace traditional payment methods. The aim of this dissertation was therefore to analyze if payment systems based on fingerprint technology have the potential to sustain in the market and if they might be able to supplement or even replace traditional payment systems. In order to assess digiPROOF a framework of success factors for payment systems was established in this dissertation. Subsequently a survey of users as well as non-users of the system was carried out and the digiPROOF system was evaluated according to the framework of success factors to draw a conclusion on whether fingerprint based payment systems are able to sustain successfully in the market and how the future payment market might look like. The approach of evaluating the system from a theoretical point of view through the framework of success factors and triangulating the results through empirical findings by questioning users as well as non-users allowed to draw a holistic picture and make a positive assumption on the future prospects of fingerprint based payment systems.

Markus Mayer entwickelt einen Anforderungskatalog an eine gerechte Besteuerung von grenzüberschreitenden Arbeitnehmer-sachverhalten, der nationale, internationale und europarechtliche Aspekte der Besteuerung einschließt. Basierend auf einer Darstellung des geltenden Steuerrechts nimmt er eine Analyse und kritische Würdigung der mit den grenzüberschreitenden Arbeitnehmersachverhalten verbundenen Besteuerungsfolgen vor und leitet Reformempfehlungen zu einer systemkonformen Besteuerung ab. Die Arbeit wurde mit dem Förderpreis Internationales Steuerrecht 2011 ausgezeichnet.
