This book integrates findings from across domains in performance psychology to focus on core research on what influences peak and non-peak performance. The book explores basic and applied research identifying cognition-action interactions, perception-cognition interactions, emotion-cognition interactions, and perception-action interactions. The book explores performance in sports, music, and the arts both for individuals and teams/groups, looking at the influence of cognition, perception, personality, motivation and drive, attention, stress, coaching, and age. This comprehensive work includes contributions from the US, UK, Canada, Germany, and Australia.

Integrates research findings found across domains in performance psychology Includes research from sports, music, the arts, and other applied settings Identifies conflicts between cognition, action, perception, and emotion Explores influences on both individual and group/team performance Investigates what impacts peak performance and error production

This volume investigates the implications of how our brain directs our movements on decision making. An extensive body of knowledge in chapters from international experts is presented as well as integrative group reports discussing new directions for future research. The understanding of how people make decisions is of central interest to experts working in fields such as psychology, economics, movement science, cognitive neuroscience, neuroinformatics, robotics, and sport science. For the first time the current volume provides a multidisciplinary overview of how action and cognition are integrated in the planning of and decisions about action.- Offers intense, focused, and genuine interdisciplinary perspective- Conveys state-of-the-art and outlines future research directions on the hot topic of mind and motion (or embodied cognition)- Includes contributions from psychologists, neuroscientists, movement scientists, economists, and others

Judgment, Decision-Making, and Embodied Choices introduces a new concept of embodied choices which take sensorimotor experiences into account when limited time and resources forces a person to make a quick decision. This book combines areas of cognitive psychology and movement science, presenting an integrative approach to understanding human functioning in everyday scenarios. This is the first book focusing on the role of the gut as a second brain, introducing the link to risky behavior. The book's author engages readers by providing real-life experiences and scenarios connecting theory to practice. Discusses the role of gut feelings and the brain-gut behavior connection Demonstrates that behavior influences decision and other people's perceptions about mood or character Includes research on medical decisions and shopping decisions Illustrates how to train embodied choices

Performance Psychology: Connecting Research and Application in Sports, Second Edition offers a comprehensive exploration of the scientific principles underpinning human performance in sports and high-pressure environments. This volume addresses the critical need for integrating empirical research with practical strategies to enhance performance outcomes across diverse athletic and performance domains. Building on the first edition, this second edition examines emerging technologies, such as AI and wearable devices, and expands its coverage of social justice and diversity considerations in the realm of sports psychology. The book is organized into five detailed sections. The introductory section establishes the conceptual and methodological basis of performance psychology, providing essential definitions and frameworks for understanding the field. The second section explores high-performance sport psychology, examining phenomena such as paradoxical movements, talent development, parental support, and gender-specific performance issues. The psychophysiology section explores mind-body interactions, physiological responses to stress, emotion regulation, and individual differences influencing performance. The sensorimotor expertise section investigates perceptual-motor skills, developmental perspectives, decision-making, and multisensory integration. The final section emphasizes movement dynamics, including embodied judgment, aesthetics, auditory perception, and visual perception in expert actions, integrating cutting-edge research with practical implications. This second edition of Performance Psychology offers significant benefits to its audience by bridging the gap between research and applied practice. It provides evidence-based insights, state-of-the-art methodologies, and innovative technologies, fostering improved training, assessment, and intervention strategies. Sports psychology is a dynamically developing discipline on the intersection between psychology and sports science. It deals with human experience and action in the complex field of sport and exercise. Areas of interest include options for ways of optimizing sports performance, on the one hand, and topics relating to sport and health as well as the sociopsychological effects of sport and exercise on the other. This textbook discusses these topics primarily in relation to the empirical and experimental foundations of the field and in the context of the current state of international research. In 12 chapters, internationally renowned authors introduce the empirical and experimental foundations for the individual topics of perception and attention, motor learning and motor expertise, emotion and motivation, embodiment and social-psychological aspects of sport, and they discuss the research methods that are central to each of these subject areas.
