The CIUTI FORUM 2009 Translating the Future focused on translation in a world in transition within the context of globalization. Recent political developments seem to be leading to a world society that is polycentric and multipolar. An international system will emerge that will be characterized by a new inter-regionalisation through a large number of interregional arrangements of various forms of economic integration projects all over the world. Following the example of the European Union, they will evolve into competing regional entities like ASEAN in Southeast Asia, NAFTA in North America, or MERCOSUR in South America. Confronted with these new geopolitical settings, the CIUTI FORUM 2009 focused on these regions which will probably develop into strong economic powers, alongside the United States and the European Union. Owing to this multi-lateralizing inter-regionalism, the exchange of goods, products and services in industry and finance will continue growing exponentially, a fact that correlates with an extremely high demand for foreign language services of all kinds. This increased need has resulted in new challenges and tasks, not only for practicing professional translators and their professional organizations, but also for translation education institutions. Contributions are made in either French or English; special stress is put on the training and intercultural communication with China, taking into account the economic and political issues, on which experts focus from an international, interdisciplinary and multifaceted perspective.

Since CIUTI Forums are intended to bring vocational university institutes into contact with the professional world to permit exchanges of experience, this 2010 FORUM (United Nations, Geneva) addressed once again the fact that new political and economic blocs have crystallised in recent decades that are more or less economically linked with one another (EU, ASEAN, MERCOSUR, ECOWAS, etc.). This should not, however, be interpreted in a purely politico-economic context, since consideration must also be given to cultural globalization, which renders intercultural dialogue necessary supported by qualified translators and interpreters who were gaining an important role as language mediators. In accordance with CIUTI’s wishes, the contributors focused on the effects of the new political and economic global scene from different perspectives, among them the issue of effective and efficient training supported by novative approaches. The tasks of language services of the European Commission, the Russian Federation and Central Asia were dealt with, Asia’s driving forces in translation and interpreting were highlighted, namely China and its ASEAN neighbours. Finally, an attempt was made to create a link to economic geography which would make it possible to determine which regions favour the translation industry, which specialised areas have become leaders of international trade and which language combinations would be advisable. This book contains contributions in English, French, and German.

Our current knowledge society, as exemplified in our universities, is booming. The socialization of knowledge production, along with the development of interand transdisciplinary research groupings within traditionally discipline-based teaching institutions is equally increasing, even to the extent, that new terminology is coined to better specify this cross-sector collaboration. One of these new concepts which have emerged within the framework of interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity is heterogenic cooperation. This concept describes the bringing together of knowledge from different sources and can be observed mainly when specialists are dependent on skills and knowledge which do not exist within the framework of their own scientific domain. The ultimate result of heterogenic cooperation will enlarge any cooperation by integrating partners from different domains, fostering collaboration in a common project with a homogeneous result. In a nutshell: the pathway from heterogeneity to homogeneity. The proceedings of the CIUTI FORUM 2012 highlight different types of networks leading not only to better practices and academic quality but also to new and innovative partnerships. Such as a solid integration of partners from industry and professional associations as well as from the language services of the United Nations, the European Parliament and the European Commission. This volume also strives to outpace in fine the status of Translation Studies as a hybrid discipline in order to be able to serve other scientific domains as a source of knowhow, skills and competences. This book contains contributions in English, French and German.

Such as new global partnerships between Universities and Organizations and transcultural negociations with a special case study of US-Latinos.A special section of this book is dedicated to training and research issues, which have to handle the difficult task of preparing students for the globalized and changing market on the one hand, and showing research directions permitting new approaches to highly sustainable training methods and curriculum development. On the other hand, the delicate question is raised whether multilingualism in language training is a drawback for translation didacts. This book contains contributions in English, French and German.

The speakers of the 2015 edition of the Forum all showed a particular interest in interdisciplinary research and training. The representatives of translation industry, international and national entities and organisations, professional associations, trainers and researchers offered deep insights into their everyday work, displaying all the problems encountered and solutions found. One of the main themes was also the Silk Road Project and its multifaceted approaches – linguistic, cultural and economic – with all its drawbacks, pitfalls and challenges. In the section Transnational Private Public Partnerships the speakers stressed the importance of a global network of quality oriented partners. Interdisciplinary highlights were speakers from other disciplines who addressed in their speeches problems concerning world economy and science, which are of vital importance to all major actors.

Quality assurance has been a major issue in Higher Education discourse during the past decade. Evaluations, accreditations and assessments have almost become standard procedures within the framework of translation studies. This quest for quality has not only to integrate market needs and new market requirements, but also novel strategies in training – whereby training learners and trainers has to be given equal attention.Translation quality has become a key issue in the interlinguistic and intercultural communication market as well as in the translator education environment. It has to be looked upon as a multifaceted issue to which all major players have to contribute: institutes of higher education, labor market and individual translators.Within the framework of the CIUTI FORUM 2008, the speakers emphasized the different aspects of quality from the point of view of the trainer, the professional and the market. This volume tries to highlight all those quality issues from an international, interdisciplinary and multifaceted perspective.
